He also risked his life to fight Grendel’s mother by himself. “And desperate, lifted it high over his head and struck with all the strength he had left, caught her in the neck and cut it through...” Reference to page 54, lines 537-542. He was willing to give his life up for his land and his people. He proved he was brave when he didn’t back down from dangerous feats and battles. “Then Beowulf rose, still brave, still strong, and with his shield at his side, and a mail shirt on his breast, strode calmly, confidently, toward the tower under the rocky cliffs: no coward could’ve walked there!” He stood his ground. He only used the same type of weapon, if any, that his opponent(s) used. So in conclusion, Beowulf showed three traits of an Epic Hero. He showed courage, valor, and bravery. He fought many battles, and won them up until his tragic death while battling the

This depicts a knight who took a challenge that at face value, seemed like an easy win but, when the impossible became possible he did not waver. This quote that can be used to explain the courage it took for him to win at his challenge,” Sir Gawain laid hold is axe and lifted it high into the air…and then swiftly he slashed the naked neck.”(Pearl poet 161).To be able to do that without any hesitation requires intense courage sure what happened after that separates the men from the Hero’s. Beowulf shows bravery from the time he fought the mighty Dragon when all left him. He will not back down from the Dragon even if his men do not show bravery. Beowulf will do anything to win because he is not afraid. While fighting the great Dragon, he was struggling, but he never quit. "Beowulf rose, still brave, and a mail shirt on his breast" (Beowulf 688-689). This shows that even though the Dragon was greater than Beowulf, he still rose to bravery. It is said that Zeus, the Lord of the Sky, once stated that a true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength but by the strength of his heart. A person who claims to be a hero can boast about his strength and how many monsters he’s defeated, but he can’t be a true hero if in the end he’s defeating all these monsters to show off. A true and epic hero is the man or woman who has the intent on helping people in spite of overwhelming obstacles. Beowulf, because of his selflessness, valor, and honor, is the epitome of an epic hero.…

Strength is one of the most important characteristics of a hero and Beowulf definitely exhibits this characteristic. When he landed on the Dane’s land he boasted to the King about his strength. He speaks of killing huge sea serpents and even mentions wanting to kill Grendel with his bare hands, for example, “He might think less of me if I let my sword go where my feet were afraid to, if I hid behind some broad shield: my hands alone shall fight for me, struggle for life against the monster.” (265-269).…

If a person does not risk death for their society, they will not be considered a hero; one will be considered as just an ordinary person. However, Beowulf proves that he is not just an ordinary person when he performs brave deeds and is faced with death on numerous accounts for the good of his people. Beowulf faces Grendel, a man-eating monster; Grendel’s mother, a water witch; and the dragon, a hot breath and poisonous creature. When Beowulf faces Grendel’s mother in lines 620-623 “And in an instant she had him down, held helpless. / Squatting with her weight on his stomach, she drew / A dagger, brown with dried blood and prepared / To avenge her only son” he sees death right before him. He keeps fighting because in lines 683-684 Beowulf says “No man but me / Could hope to defeat this monster”. When Beowulf faced the dragon in lines 718-722 “The monster came quickly toward him, / Pouring out fire and smoke, hurrying / To its fate. Flames beat at the iron / Shield, and for a time it held, protected / Beowulf as he’d planned; then it began to melt” Beowulf’s life flashes before his eyes again when he realizing that the shield is not going to hold up, and he will die from the dragon. Beowulf upholds the ideals of the Anglo-Saxon society; courage, loyalty, and honor throughout the entire literature of…

Also, Beowulf constantly demonstrates his bravery with valiant and heroic acts. One way he shows his courage is that when he is warned by a coastguard who thinks there is nothing anybody can do about the monster; Beowulf boldly declares he is “come to do what [he] can against the demon Grendal”(22). This quote shows Beowulf’s bravery because even with the warnings that Grendal has killed many men before him, he still ventures on without fear. Another daring act of Beowulf happens when he is at the mouth of the Firedrakes sinister lair, and has “come to quench him” (98). This example shows Beowulf’s courageousness because he is not afraid to fight the Firedrake, even if he has to bring the fight to the fiend. It is clear that Beowulf is a very brave and daring hero.…
