The Cocker Spaniel: A Short Story
Hi! I’m Ramona, the Cocker Spaniel from Iowa, named after the Beverly Clearly books. When my mom takes me shopping with her - like all the freaking time - everyone tells me how sweet and pretty I am. I mean, I love the attention and pets - my butt wiggles like it’s nobody’s business - but I kinda feel odd when they tell me I’m sweet. Cause I’m not. I’m Sassy, Mouthy, Rambunctious, and oh boy do I have a temper! Mom says I’m “stress reactive” or something like that. I just know that when I get REAAAALLY excited, I can’t contain myself so I get a little snarky and snarly.
To help get rid of some of my energy, and to give me something to think about, Mom signed me up for Agility and Flyball. I do love to work, once I calm down enough to listen

The common emotion that the poodle and the Scotch terrier cause the narrator to feel is embarrassment. The narrator even says that Jeannie, the Scotch terrier, gave him his "moment of keenest embarrassment" when she delivered a seventh puppy on a street corner (page 1, paragraph 1). The mechanic's look of "incredulity mixed with hatred" (page 1, paragraph 1) gives Thurber the epiphany that he has been riding around holding a tiny green umbrella over a ridiculous looking poodle all through the streets of New York City. Both incidents happen in public and many people witness each event; therefore, both dogs managed to publically bring their master some very embarrassing…

When I was ten years old I tried out for my local travel soccer team. I did not expect to make it, but by some stroke of luck I did. I started playing and it was not what I was expecting. In the past I averaged a hat trick every game, but travel soccer was a lot different. I started playing defense, but that might be an overstatement, because I did not get a whole lot of minutes. I knew that if I wanted to play more I was going to have to put in more work outside of practice. I started practicing everyday switching from running, to foot skills, to agility training. I probably spent more time complaining about it and there were a few time that my parents had to push me to practice, but I knew that I had to put in the work.…

When I was in grade school I would come home from football practice and have my dad time me running sprints in the alley behind our house. I knew that more repetitions and better technique would make me faster. Playing soccer since the age of 5 has been my passion. However, along with playing came injuries. I suffered a concussion playing U12 soccer, and still…

As a child, almost any activity is interesting besides staying inside of the house all day. I was an active child growing up. I participated in a wide variety of activities for multiple years such as: dancing, karate, cheerleading, and softball. When I entered middle school, I decided it was time to try something new. Basketball tryouts were coming up and I felt like I would enjoy the new experience. I ended up making the team, but halfway into the season I decided basketball was not the sport for me. A couple months later, track posters smothered the hallways encouraging students to join the team. I raced home and mentioned joining the team to my mother who then told me to try it out and see if I liked it. I went to the…

I came from a family of really athletic people. My Mom and sister Kaitlyn both played softball from a young age and had many great accomplishments. My sister Kassidy played soccer from a young age as well. I have a lot to live up to. I started playing soccer when I four and I played for one year until I was no longer interested in it anymore. I started softball when I was five, and it wasn’t my favorite. I then retreated back to soccer for a few years. When I was in second grade, I cut my ankle on the bowl that my dog broke when I was trying to get cereal because I was hungry. After that I really didn’t want to play soccer anymore, so I decided to retire my soccer cleats forever. After this, I tried various different ranging from swim team to softball, and as you can imagine, softball stuck. When it did though, it came with my hot-headed personality showing. There was no way around it. I was also very independent, which could be a good thing in some cases, but as I got older I was required to do more group work. I just didn’t know how to.…

we’ll do handstands and cartwheels and round offs. these things help me and jade connect because she helps me and I help her. I know that my body needs the exercise for me to continue in life and not be lazy. I have always loved sports no matter what they are although some may not be Favorited as much. I enjoy going to the Rockies and broncos games with my friends and family. I have tried many sport that are different than the other. Some sports didn't even have anything in common, but I liked trying them all. The reason why is because even though I didn't love love them all I still enjoyed trying them. Soft ball was difficult for me at the beginning and at the end, but even though it may have been someone tough I know that I could do it. Now we didn't win any games, but we tried as hard as we could have for a team of brand new softball players playing in the majors. I know I could have tried harder, but I didn't.…

It was a relaxing day at home in the Helfman household. My mom was constantly jabbering on the phone, my dad’s eyes were glued to his computer working, and my brother was stuck to his bed and never got up. My brother, Danny had gotten into Syracuse University a few months earlier and he was ecstatic about the life he was going to make for himself. Danny and I got along well our whole lives, but we weren’t as close as some other siblings. This upset me because sometimes all I wanted to do was talk to my brother and get his advice. I have three dogs. My dogs Sadie, Tootsie, and Lucky are cuddly and soft toy poodles.…

I joined a gymnastics gym near my house in second grade when i was 9, and started competing when i was 10. My mom told me that I have to do well in school if I was going to be focused on a sport along with school, or she would take me out of gymnastics. Soon enough, I wasn’t doing so well in social studies and comm skills. I was scared my mom would make me quit, But I worked as hard as I could so get back up there. Focusing more on school than outside activities, I got that grade back up and I continued with my favorite sport. I love gymnastics, but I don’t let it get in the way of school because school always comes first.…

When at the age of five, my parents began to experiment with and place me in many different activities. The first activity was gymnastics, which was a complete failure. The gym instructor would lift my body to the high bars so I can get a feel for it and in that moment I knew it wasn’t for me. The second activity my parents decided I should try next was track and field. Track was fun at first, I actually like to run and I was pretty fast, I believed. When I joined the track team the season was going to begin soon only giving me three weeks to prepare myself for my first track meet. I trained for a while thinking I was decent ready for what life has to throw at me, then the day of the track meet arrived.…

They will tell you that making these events fun or enjoyable was a challenge. In order to effectively engage kids in these lackluster activities, we must make them fun for them. I came to the realization that the kids were not always going to share my perspective, and in some cases they may fail to take notice of the endgame. No kid wants to run five laps or sprint around the bases after practice when they are fatigued and desire to go home. If making a five lap run seems like the utmost fun activity at the moment, the kids would be persuaded to follow, so that’s what I would do. Anytime you enjoy conditioning, it is a victory. At the age of 18, I still do not enjoy it. Making the activities enjoyable and fun was one of my goals, and I succeeded.…
