The Code of Ethics for a Dentist
A code of ethics is an important tool to help in understanding how to behave appropriately in certain situations. My career choice is to become a dentist and the ADA has a system of moral principles that apply values and judgments to this profession. Dentists are required to follow high ethical standards that have the benefit of the patient as their primary goal. The dentist’s codes of ethics pertain to service to the public, conduct in a dental office and between dental practitioners, and how dental practices and services are promoted. It also allows dentists to hold themselves to the highest standards in any given behavior or action whether it is to know the difference between right or wrong, good or bad and just or unjust. Honesty, compassion, kindness, integrity, fairness and charity are all qualities part of the ethical education of a dentist and practice of dentistry and help to define the true professional. The code of ethics for dentists that I chose is a professional code. Professional ethics refers to those codes of conduct to be followed in your profession. However, dentists may be subject to a corporate code of ethics requiring them to keep propriety information confidential and at the same time be subject to a professional code of ethics that insist that the dentist do whatever is necessary to protect the health and safety of the workers. These are quality codes of ethics because they are specific and honest. Dental professional groups must revise these codes periodically to remain relevant. These codes of ethics are both practical and theoretical level codes. They are practical because dentists have the obligation to treat patients in the same way they would want to be treated and priority should be given to groups or individuals at the workplace who are most vulnerable or most exposed to health risks. They are also theoretical codes
