The dilemma of whether to be socially responsible or not.
The first image which comes to anyone’s mind when someone says ‘Youth,’ is the image of a group of friends sitting together laughing and teasing, probably planning to bunk a lecture so they can go watch a film. People say they are ignorant and indifferent to everything but the aspect which interests them. Youth has been stereotyped by society and unfortunately, by the youth themselves. The reality is a lot more complicated. Youth is a confused section of society in today’s fast lives. The peer pressure and their dreams are driving them to live monotonous and indifferent lives, but certainly not ignorant ones. Ignorance in today’s world is very much contaminated by social media and Journalism. Ignorant or not, at the end of the day each youngster faces a conflict in his mind: whether to be socially responsible and fulfill his or her duty or be indifferent about social issues plaguing our country and the world.
Large part of the young generation today is aware of the issues and their social responsibility. As individuals they recognise their role in today’s society and therefore are presented with a choice, a choice that might be influenced by moral values, their passion for a particular aspect or simply their way of trying to make a change and give something back to the society or environment.
On talking to a few of the youngsters on the responsibility they have taken up, we found out that it was mostly their passion and the fact that each moment made them learn something. Sherwin Everett, a graduate of St. Xavier’s College and an active volunteer for Jivdaya Charitable Trust, said, “My passion for animals is what drove me to be a part of this trust. I have always loved animals and birds since I was a kid.
