Spain had already has past expeditions the unknown territory of Californian, however they did not stay in order to figure it out. The Sacred Expedition was created for the Spanish Officials to stay on the land and cultivate into something that would represent Spain which is why the Presidio and the Mission was created. Unfortunately for the San Carlos ship that contained all the important agriculture and church supplies gets hit with a case of scurvy as most of the crewmembers are sick and some died as a little camp is set up to help with the recovery. About a month later the land group led by Captain Fernando Rivera arrive at the coast of the San Diego Bay and found the people from the ship are dead and ill. This led to the establishment of a new camp on Presidio Hill which is nearby a relatively big Indian Valley. Around mid-June, the last land group of the expedition led by Father Junipero Serra and Captain Gaspar de Portola finally arrived after facing some difficulties with their journey to New Spain. After a month of settling in with the other expedition groups, on July 16, 1769 Mission San Diego de Alcala is formally established on Presidio
