Erin's Protein Case Study
1. Explain why Erin’s assumptions about her protein needs are unrealistic based on her current weight.
Erin’s protein consumption is too low for her weight. This is roughly 13% of her kcalorie intake which is closer to the lower end of the ranges of 10-35 percent. This is unrealistic because she is not consuming enough calories of protein for her weight. If you calculate her weight by height you can clearly she needs more protein. Erin’s weight 118lbs /2.2ib/kg= 54 kg, so know take 54kg x 0.8g/kg= 43.2g protein. (Understanding, pg. 185)
2. Assuming a healthy weight for Erin is 141 pounds, use the information from the “How to” feature (p. 185) in this chapter to calculate her recommended daily protein requirement. Show your calculations.
Erin’s weight 141lbs /2.2ib/kg= 44 kg, so know take 64kg x 0.8g/kg= 51.2g of protein. (Understanding, pg. 185)

This is clearly not enough because she is underweight which makes her unhealthy. She will continue to be this way if she doesn’t increase her protein intake for calorie consumption.
4. Erin’s energy needs for a healthy weight are closer to 1600 calories a day. How might her low calorie intake influence her protein status and possibly contribute to her current health issues?
Erin’s 160 kcalorie protein intake is 13% of her low calorie diet. This low calories consumption of 1200 calories falls far too short as to the calories that are needs to supply the energy she needs. To supply her with the right amount she would need to increase her diet by 400 calories to meet the energy demand. This would be 208 kcalories roughly and would supply her a healthier weight in comparison to her 1200calories. Her lack of protein is limiting her amino acids which is why she continues to be sick and causes her bones to fracture. (Understanding, pg. 179-182)
5. How would you explain to Erin how her low intake of calories and protein contribute to her risk for
