According to the Globe and Mail, “The war cost Ottawa at least $18-billion – and much more if the cost of caring for veterans and their families is included”. The Canadian military needed sufficient funds to support Canada’s involvement in Afghanistan- which included more time commitment in all areas of the government. Those funds were put into providing the necessary equipment and supplies for war such as guns, tanks, meals, vehicles, and much more. Also, veterans that were sent home were also financially supported by the Canadian government for their service. ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬The rest of the military’s finances were focused on rebuilding the army’s infrastructure like damaged vehicles. Adding all of these expenses, came the billions of cumulative dollars that were spent by the Canadian military in the Afghan war. All of the money invested into the war also included large quantities of time and focus of the Canadian government. Canada took part in the Afghan war for over ten years in the fight against terrorism. In that time, subtle improvements were made but many critics over the years still questioned whether or not Canada’s involvement in the war was worthwhile. The time that was spent over in Afghanistan had detrimental effects on the opportunity costs on Canada since there were multiple projects in various fields over the years that could have been explored and developed if not for the costs required for the war in Afghanistan.
