Nursing personnel can be prepared for large scale disasters by joining the National Nurse Response Team (NNRT). The National Nurse Response Team is a specialty team used in any scenario requiring hundreds of nurses to assist in chemoprophylaxis, a mass vaccination program, or a scenario that overwhelms the nation’s supply of nurses in responding to a weapon of mass destruction event (Public Health Emergency, 2009, para. 1). Nurses can also be better prepared for disasters by being prepared at home, as well as attending continuing education classes on disaster preparedness, as well as large scale disaster training and…
The most important aspect in managing a disaster situation is preparedness. The simulation Disaster in Franklin County highlights the role of public health personnel, with emphasis on the public health nurse because the nurse is often a first responder to such a disaster. This helps to examine the roles, actions, coping methods, and techniques used by a nurse in a disaster scenario.…
When patient’s present to an emergency department in multisystem failure many factors contribute to the way the nurse will perform. In an emergency situation when a patient presents it involves quick assessment, complex observation, and decision making to assess the patient homeostasis level, pain management, and oxygenation. It is the nurse’s duty to prioritize what needs to be done for the patient in a limited amount of time.…
The public health nurse’s role is to assess the immediate community health needs, provides education, and information to prevent secondary conditions like food poisoning. The public health nurse’s role in the simulation was as a liaison for a patient in acute distress. She called the search and rescue team to quickly transport the patient to an operating hospital. She also assisted an asthma patient use a nebulizer while the electricity was still out. The nurse also orchestrated for medication refills, clean water for baby formula, and arranging transfers. The nurse also participated in preventive care by…

During the disaster the public health nurse worked together with other other disciplines such as the operation chief who was incharge of search and rescue, the logistic 's chief who arrange for temperary housing and communication network and the public health department who inspected food and safe water. They asses patient on their arrival and categorised patients priories based on their conditions and medical assistance needs. Triaging is the prioritizing process used within the ED setting to assess individual based on their injury/illness severity, symptoms, vitual signs using the triage scale (Ebrahimi, 2016). A triage scale is a scale used by triage nurse to organise patient care (Duro et al. 2010). I was on my third day of residential care placement; the staff had just started to take turns for their morning tea break so I took the time to catch up on my case study patient’s medical history in the nurses’ station. Within a few minutes the Manager of the rest home ran in to gather the blood pressure machine and bandages. She informed another student nurse and myself to “take these to Max’s (pseudonym) room NOW, while I call an ambulance”.…
Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, Second Edition, “describes what nursing is, what nurses do, and those responsibilities for which nurses are accountable. Institutional policies and procedures establish other parameters that guide nursing practice. The Standards of Professional Nursing Practice are authoritative statements of the duties that all registered nurses, regardless of role, population, or specialty, are expected to perform competently. Also, there are specific conditions and clinical circumstances may also affect the application of the standards at a given time, e.g., during a natural disaster. The standards are subject to formal, periodic review and revision”. (ANA, 2010a)…
Nurses need to remain creative in finding ways to document what has been done to a patient with regards of his or her care. In a war zone, we can document key components of patient treatment on the uniforms of soldiers, and the same can be done with civilian population in the absence of computers or charting for short periods of time. Another important aspect is the transport of first aid equipment and supplies as soon as the disaster is identified, including body bags, stretchers, wheelchairs, crutches, splints, IV solutions, blood products, antibiotics, and plenty of analgesics and narcotics. Keeping an adequate number of chaplains, counselors, and security is imperative for the emergency department to maintain order under the chaos and…
Injury is a major cause of premature death and disability worldwide. In many instances the prompt provision of emergency care and rapid movement of injured victims from the scene to a health-care facility can save lives, reduce the chance of disability, and dramatically improve positive long-term outcomes. This may seem like a lot of labor but thanks to the dedication of Emergency Medical technicians all is possible. Emergency Medical Technicians have a mission to save lives of sick or injured people in emergency situations. The job duties of an Emergency Medical Technician include providing initial assessment and treatment of patients in emergencies. Abbreviated as EMT, the education requirements of Emergency…
As a staff nurse in the emergency room I had to develop leadership skills in order to effectively deliver quality care and maintain safety in a fast paced environment. By identifying safety risks associated with the assignment of inexperienced nurses to triage and discussing the breakdown in communication between physicians and staff, caused by inaccurate triage acuity levels, I effectively facilitated the change in the process of assignments to triage. Once the need of education, mentoring and nursing collaboration to support inexperienced triage nurses in role transition was acknowledged significant positive changes were experienced in staff communication, patient safety, and teamwork which ultimately improved morale. Although, I have not held a management position I have succeeded in resolving conflicts and de-escalating patient and family complaints in the hectic emergency room environment by listening and identifying the requests and views of the patient and…
There are 17 beds in the E.R. They help people with trauma to the head, gunshot wounds, sickness, and if the sickness isn’t so bad that they can walk and other stuff they send them through Fast Track. We was also told to ask why do they take so long to assist to their patients if they have trauma to the head and so forth and someone said because they have other patients and because of the average waiting time. Now the hospital has to wear a specific type of scrubs and the non-clinical people wears a black pants and or skirt with a white shirt with a logo. OBGYN (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) that’s were women go to get a check-up themselves and so forth. Throughout the hospital there are codes.
