The Crucible Act 2 Analysis

In Act 2, Mary Warren, John and Elizabeth Proctor’s maid, Mary, returned back to their house to announce that she was an official of the court for the witch trials. She said that thirty-nine people were in jail and Goody Osburn will be hung because she did not confess to the witchcraft. Mary told them that Elizabeth was accused, but she defended Elizabeth before the case was dismissed. Elizabeth then realized that Abigail wanted to take her place as Proctor’s wife, and that she was going to get executed by Abigail accusing her of witchcraft. Reverend Hale was sent to visit the Proctors and asked questions. His intentions were to ask about their Christian faith to see if they had participated in any witchcraft. He noted that the Proctors hadn’t attended church often and their youngest son is not baptized. After Hale made Proctor recite the Ten Commandments, Proctor forgot the commandment prohibiting adultery. Ezekiel Cheever and Herrick, the town marshal, arrived with a warrant for Elizabeth’s arrest from Abigail. Cheever asked Elizabeth if she owned any dolls, and Elizabeth said she hadn’t owned a doll since she was a little girl. Cheever found the doll that Mary had made her
Elizabeth might be getting hanged, along with 39 other people. Instead of the girls owning up to their witchcraft, innocent townspeople are being killed. I really liked how Proctor would defend his wife, Elizabeth, even though he does have feelings for Abigail. I thought that Mary, a friend of Abigail, and the Proctor’s maid, would testify against Elizabeth and stand for Abigail. I think that when the court case occurs, Mary will turn sides and the truth will come out. I think that Proctor will announce his affair with Abigail and ruin his reputation, but at the same time, he would save his wife. I also think that Abigail would never get in trouble about the witchcraft, that she would blame her friends or more innocent
