In the Salem witch trials, hundreds of people were killed due to suspicion of witchcraft. In the book the crucible by Arther Miller a big concern for most readers was: who had the most conflict. Throughout the book many characters had disagreements with others. As people argued they eventually came to a point where people were accused of witchcraft and could be killed for it. Some people say John Procter had the most conflict and Abigail didn't because she was a bad person, but I believe even though she is bad she still had the most conflict. Despite others being in conflict, Abigail had the most conflict because she had to worry about who gets hurt in the situation and getting caught lying. She goes through plenty of trouble trying to escape from these things.…

As the Salem minister in the Puritan era, Parris’s personifications mirror one who possesses a brim-stone and fiery demeanor and one who does not take into account anybody’s suggestions without his affirmation. Thus Parris’ self-portrait evinces a man who possesses a deal of enemies. As a result, after Parris finds his daughter, Betty- seriously ill, having danced in the forest the night before, crowds of people begin spewing accusations that Betty must have cavorted with the Devil. Meanwhile apprehension grips Parris’s mind that it also compels him arbitrarily to blame many townspeople. Parris blames others to divert attention away from himself. He worries that if the townspeople learn that his daughter and niece have fiddled with witchcraft, his position as pastor could be…

Reverend Parris is the minister of Salem’s church. He is a paranoid, defensive self-absorbed, nervous, and self-pitying figure. He is very concerned with building in his position in the community. He has a slave from Barbados called Tituba. He has a daughter called Betty. He believes that faction plans will force him to leave Salem, so he attempts to strengthen his authority through the witch trial proceedings. The fact that he has many enemies who want him gone from Salem suggests that he is abhorred by many people in the town. Also, he wants to persecute his enemies. He doesn’t want people to find out the truth about what happened in the woods. First of all Parris is greedy. These are some examples of Parris’s greed such as complaining over firewood, insisting on costless golden candlesticks for the church, demanding that he have the accomplishment to the house he lives in.…

The town had already been through three other reverends, who had all left because of financial issues, but Parris needed to get away from Boston, so he accepted the position. The Salem Witch Trials in Salem, Massachusetts began as a simple misunderstanding creating a domino effect that overtook the entire community, allowing chaos to ensue, and lives to be lost. The persecution of the men and women of Salem was encouraged by Samuel Parris. His sermons began to develop a dark tone because he was not getting his way and thought that he would scare his congregation into doing as they were instructed. Even after consulting with many doctors, and five other reverends from surrounding communities, he still sought out another opinion, any other opinion that could explain what his daughter was experiencing.…

Samuel Parris and John Hale are the two ministers in The Crucible and were initially alike in their attitudes towards witchcraft. However, their personalities show some striking dissimilarities. Unlike Hale, Reverend Parris is characterized by extreme paranoia and egotism. He is very static- his traits and motives remain consistent from the beginning to the end of the play. Although a religious man and believer in witchcraft like Parris, Hale values human life and is motivated by personal beliefs and his sense of morality, disregarding his best interests. He is a very dynamic character, becoming progressively less confident and trusting of law and doctrine as his faith is tested throughout the ordeal.…

Reverend Parris, the minister in Salem, fears the people of the town to a point where he can hardly leave his house without believing that someone is plotting against him. Reverend Parris has a suspicion that there is a faction in the church that is looking to overthrow him just as they have overthrown that past 2 ministers before him. He explains this idea of faction to John Proctor, who he assumes to be a member of this. Reverend Parris’ daughter, Betty, was the first one that caught the sickness, his servant, Tituba, was the first one that called…

Abigail Williams, the antagonist from The Crucible, had originally made accusations of witchcraft to save her own reputation in the town. After being caught dancing in the woods with the rest of the teenage girls in the village, Abigail had mentioned witchcraft to get the blame off of her and onto villagers with low social standing, such as the homeless woman Sarah Good and the slave Tituba. In my opinion, Senator McCarthy may have originally believed that his victims were honestly involved in the communist party, therefore a threat to democracy. Once Abigail and McCarthy realized what power they had, they used it to their advantage. Such was the case of Elizabeth Proctor, who was falsely accused so that Abigail could try to win over the heart of Elizabeth's husband, John Proctor. Once certain people realized what was going on, however, they tried to bring this obstruction of justice out into the open, knowing full well that they might be brought into the matter themselves. An example of this would be the case of John Proctor who, to save his wife, exposed his darkest secret and tried to overthrow the power that was Abigail Williams. Another would be Edward R. Murrow, who…

A morally ambiguous character who I thought played a pivotal role in the Salem witch hunt was Reverend John Hale. At first, Hale was completely convinced that the witchcraft occurring in Salem was in fact reality and was determined to get rid of it whatever way possible. He was constantly researching the source of witchcraft itself and how to destroy it. He investigated Betty Parris and the Putnam’s daughter to gather clues and evidence as to why these events are happening. He also talks with Abigail Williams and Tituba and aks them if they ever recruited others to be followers of the devil. Later in the act, Hale’s confidence and determination starts to slip as he cannot find legitimate evidence as to why these events are occurring.…

This plays a huge role in The Crucible when Reverend Parris the minister in Salem tells the town that the girls that were dancing in the woods naked are possessed. He does this to protect his reputation in the community because if they found out that his daughter is kidding about being bewitched Salem might want Parris to be kicked out of town. But since he is the minister and he is the highest ranked person in the town more people are likely to believe him, Salem at this time is a theocracy and is ran by the bible so that means the minister is the highest rank possible at the time making Parris very trustworthy and reliable. Another encounter of this would be when Senator John McCarthy was making accusations against people during the Red Scare in the 1950’s. Many people thought that McCarthy was a complete whackjob because he was accusing people that were outstanding individuals in society at the time, but since he was a United States Senator a huge accomplishment to have more people believed him because usually when you're part of the government you don't lie about situations like…
