The Crucible Dialogue Essay
Judge: If you don’t confess to being a witch then you will get hanged.
Proctor: I will confess, and let it be known on the walls that i am a witch so I can live free with my wife Elizabeth.
Judge: Okay you can live , but you need to name out anymore witches that you know, if not you will be sent to jail, also if we find that it isn’t true you will be sentenced to jail as well.
Proctor: I will not name any names.
Judge: Now are you sure this is all true? If you don’t name any names it seems a little suspicious that you really don’t know anymore witches.
Narrator: “Proctor seems to become nervous but still will confess to to being a witch, but he may not confess right away or that easy.”
Proctor: Yes sir, this is all true, if i am allowing you to put it up on the

Proctor: Every time i walk past them they seem to be saying a lot of weird words that i can’t really seem to put together, I was thinking it sounded something like a spell maybe? They say those words into some sort of a circle form.
Judge: Who’s them?
Proctor: I can’t name.
Judge: If you do not name anymore witches I am going to have to hang you.
Proctor: Okay I will name the witches, I believe that the other witches may be Tituba, Betty Parris, and Reverend Parris.
Judge: Why do you suspect them? Are those the ones who were saying those weird words as they were sitting in some sort of a circle you say?
Proctor: Yes sir they are. As a matter of fact I have an eye witness.
Judge: Now why didn’t you bring up that you had an eye witness earlier?
Proctor: Like i said I do not feel comfortable naming any names, but if it’ll help me get out of this trouble i will.
Judge: Who is that eye witness?
Proctor: It is my wife, Elizabeth Proctor.
Judge: If you can get your wife Elizabeth Proctor to confess to that then you are free to go.
Proctor: My wife is sitting in the audience if I could bring her up here to confess I

Proctor uses slight remarks that make others question his situation. Hale was asking Proctor and Elizabeth questions to verify that there was nothing questionable about the couple. When doing so, Proctor could not recite the last commandment- "thou shalt not commit adultery". Abigail lies and casts a spell on Elizabeth to protect her name. She uses fear to control their village. When Elizabeth went against her by removing her from the Proctor house, Abigail proceeded to dance and tell Tituba to cast a spell. In 1692 nineteen men and women and two dogs were convicted and hanged for witchcraft in a small village in eastern Massachusetts. By the standards of our own time, if not of that, it was a minor event, a spasm of judicial violence that was concluded within a matter of months. The bodies were buried in shallow graves or not at all, as a further indication that the convicted had not only forfeited participation in the community of man in this life, but in the community of saints in the next. Just how shallow those graves were, however, is evident from the fact that the people buried there were not eradicated from history: their names remain with us to this day, not least because of Arthur Miller, for whom past events and present realities have always been pressed together by a moral logic. In his hands the ghosts of those who died have proved real enough even if the witches they were presumed to be were little more than fantasies conjured by a mixture of fear, ambition, frustration, jealousy, and perverted pride.…
