The Crusades Research Paper
The Crusades, often enough, is used as a weapon for atheist to disprove Christianity as a peaceful religion. Many people say the crusades were a chain of attacks against world religion. Others claim it was an excuse to murder thousands. In my personal opinion, I disagree with all of the aforementioned claims. The crusades were a chain of events that were started by Pope Urban II, to regulate, and to attempt to eliminate Islam from the face of the earth. Islam had been expanding through violence by threatening other nations that if they had not turned to Islam, the Muslims would execute and behead everyone outside their city. Pope Urban opposed these ideas and would not let Europe fall under the beliefs of Islam.
So Urban prepared “crusaders” to fight for him to try to decimate Islam. The struggles of the

The Bible doesn’t force you like Islam does. Atheist are not the only ones to attribute Christianity to the crusades, historians often agree with the claim that Christianity caused the crusades.
Simply false. Islamic Expansion cause the crusades. Pope Urban wanted to fight fire with fire, and that he did. The only difference between the two is that Urban did it for God, and Islam did it for Allah. Essentially, The Crusades were a direct result of Jihad and Islamic Crusades.

One of the most significant and remarkable incidents of the Middle Ages was the series of conflicts known collectively as the Crusades. Generally these conflicts were militant pilgrimages to the Levant (though sometimes elsewhere) undertaken by medieval Europeans in the name of Christendom. Though there were many political and social issues involved in the whole affair, the primary theme, however superficial, was religious. The adversaries in these “wars” were non-Christians, namely Muslims, who were widely seen as the oppressors of Eastern Christians. Those engaged in the Crusades, especially the authorities preaching and administering them, believed that the Saracens (Turks, Arabs, etc) were intruding on lands that were inherently Christian. Two important primary source texts which explain this justification for war are Robert of Rheims’ account of Urban’s Speech at Clermont and La Chanson d’Antioche (The Song of Antioch) by Graindor de Douai. Though they are very different types of sources, written at different times and for different purposes, they both illustrate the reasons why Crusaders felt they were fighting for land that was rightfully theirs.…

In the First Crusade, Christian knights that came from Europe went and capture Jerusalem. They had been massacring almost all the city’s Muslim and Jewish population. The reason this happened was because Christians were being persecuted in Jerusalem, because the Holy City was passed from Egyptians to Seljuk. A Pope called for a crusade to help Christians in the east and to recover the holy lands. And then people went over there immediately. A Crusade called “People’s Crusade” had went a far way with killing, to Constantinople, but they were soon killed after that. Then another crusade went in killing a lot more people than “People’s Crusade” ever did. This crusade was led by Raymond of Toulouse, Godfrey of Bouillon, Robert of Flanders, and…

The launching of the Crusades changed the role of the church because as the church gained more power it became more of a military symbol. The church gained power during the crusades like the power to torture heretics. One of the ways Christians tortured heretics was by hanging them by their arms and jabbing them with spears (Document 3). The Inquisition was a demonstration of the church gaining more power because before the Crusades began, the church was not able to question people, but when they began, the church was able to torture people for information. The Christian Church also became a symbol of military power with the launching of the Crusades because it could send armies to far off lands, including Jerusalem and Constantinople (Document 4). The Fourth Crusade ended at Constantinople because they could not make it to Jerusalem. Pope Urban II, with the launching of the Crusades, was also able to grant people promises and slander other religions. He granted people “ Remission for sins and… imperishable glory in heaven… for fighting the enemies of Christ” (Document 5) The Pope feels this way about Muslims because they took over the Holy Lands that the Christians wanted. He wanted control of Jerusalem for himself so Christians would be able to make their pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the “remission of sins” (Doc 5) that he promised. A document from a soldier actually fighting in the Crusades would be monumentally useful in understanding motives for joining the Crusades because it would give first-hand accounts and reason for doing so from someone who actually experienced the power of the Pope’s words and…

Secondly, Pope Urban may have called for a Crusade for his own personal gain. Pope Urban would have realized that if he didn’t take action against the Muslims then he would loose power to them, as well as land and security. Therefore, Urban would only become more powerful if he called for a Crusade. This is because if he defeated the Muslims they would have to respect him more, and he would be seen as more powerful in everyone’s eyes as he led a Crusade. Urban probably also realized that Crusades sometimes resulted in more riches and resources, which he would have kept for himself making him richer and higher up in the Feudal system.…

One example as to why the crusades overall had a negative effect on the world is because many Christians and Muslims all over the world were persecuted. Pope Urban II writes in his Call to Crusade speech, “Others they bind to a post and pierce with arrows… What shall I say of the abominable rape of the women?” In this excerpt from the Pope’s speech he explains just some of the horrid things the Muslims have done to the Christians. The Muslims just kept on persecuting the Christians because they thought that if they did they would retain ownership of Jerusalem, the Holy Land.…

The ways religious people perceive the crusades in different religion differ from one another. For many Christian the crusades were a force of reconquering the “holy land”. However, for many other people such as Muslims and Jews the crusades were a catastrophic destruction of their beliefs. The crusades during the 11th and 16th for many people had different motives. For people, who were attacked by Christians the crusades meant something very different from the people, who were conquering and killing people on “the name of God”. During these times, people began to feel confuse because they did not know the “real” purpose of the actions of the Christians. On the other hand, Christian felt competent and glorious because they had the power to order and perform on the name of God. In the text by Fulcher of Chartres, one can see how what the crusades signified for the Christian population, and why they perform the way, they did. On the other hand, in text written by Solomon Bar Simson one can experience how the Jews community felt regarding the crusades. In addition, one can see how these texts have differences when describing the reasons behind and why the crusades happened.…
