The Dangers of Speeding
Speeding is driving too fast for the conditions without full regard for the vehicle condition or driver ability. There are many dangers of driving on the road and speeding is one of the biggest. I say this because speeding is something that you personally control whereas other things you can not. Speed limits are put in place and set for a reason. They are used to make sure that no harm can be done to us or to anyone else on the road. The consequences of speeding can range from simply getting a ticket for speeding to getting in a car accident or even death. We don’t always think of this, however. We are mostly concerned with getting to where we need to go when we need to go. If you are at a speed of 60 miles per hour it takes the length of a football …show more content…
field to bring your car to a stop.
13,000 lives are lost each year due to speeding. The annual cost in total for all speeding related accidents costs people 40 billion dollars a year. $.24 dollars of gas per gallon is wasted when you speed 5 miles over 60 mph. Speeding is the third leading cause of crashes. 40 to 45% of drivers regularly drive or ride above the posted speed limit. Those most commonly involved in speed related crashes are males aged 1739.
There are many reasons for why people speed but there are main reasons that I would like to focus on. One reason is because they are in a rush. There is no place that you have to be that is more important that your life or the lives of others. Another reason is because people are not paying attention enough to monitor their speed. This can because it begs the question, ¨What else aren’t you paying attention to?¨ The next reason is because people don’t think rules apply to them which can be dangerous because that leads to really reckless behavior. Also people don’t
think that their driving is dangerous or that they are so good at driving that speeding won’t be an issue in terms of danger. Lastly, people do not think that they will get caught. People always
get caught eventually.
I was going 53 miles per hour on a 40 miles per hour road. I was pulled over and given a ticket. I do not want that situation to ever happen to me again if not for the cost but for the stress and headache it caused my parents. Since then I have not gone over the speed limit and I control my speed because I know the consequences. I will not speed anymore because though I did face one of the consequences. I could have had to faced one of the more sever e consequences. We all as a group need to work on our speed because you are not only putting your life at risk but also the lives of those around you.
