According to Erin Shumaker, on average, about 9 Americans are killed every day from motor vehicle accidents that involve being distracted driving by using a cell phone, texting, or eating. So that means over 3,000 deaths per year are because of driver’s being distracted by their phones. Shumaker adds in his article that the age group most likely to send a text or email while driving is the ages between twenty one and twenty four and the risk of crashing are four times more if using a cell phone. Certainly a discomforting statistic for most that would seemingly be made aware to younger age drivers, but only becomes more of a growing problem every year.…

Five years ago on a bright June day, then-20- year-old Amanda Kloehr went about her usual cell phone routine: "Updating my Facebook status, reading other people's updates, and texting," she says. But she wasn't at home or even in class—she was behind the wheel of her car, cruising down U.S. Route 13 at a highway speed. Amanda couldn't have known that moments later her distracted driving would cause her to slam into the tractor-trailer in front of her with enough force to push the entire vehicle forward six feet. "I shouldn't have lived," she says now, still shaken. "I could have been decapitated."Instead, Amanda lost her right eye. It took 36 plates and 48 screws to rebuild her face. And more than 20 surgeries later, the road to recovery still stretches out before her. "I'm in pain everywhere all the time," she says, "but I know I'm lucky to be alive." This story comes from www.teenvogue.com. Is it really worth? Texting while driving is quickly becoming one of the countries most top killers . Many teens don't realize that texting and driving is dangerous, but it is. How big is this problem? “In 2011, 23% of the car accidents were caused from texting and driving. That is 1.3 million crashes.” according to www.textinganddrvingsaftey.com. Many believe that its becoming more of a habit for adults than for teens. Adults maybe the cause of why some teens do it. Kids watch their parents and the they think its safe cause if their parents can do it then it must be. They should be role models. The thing is they all know its wrong but it doesn't seem to stop them.…

Many people, mainly teenagers, text while driving and don’t think to consider the safety of themselves and others. Some teenagers, just like Chelsea in the Dr.Phil’s, film “Texting While Driving”, come into some near tragic experiences because of texting while driving and still don’t consider what they are doing a safety hazard. Chelsea stated that nothing can stop her from texting while driving. I’m sure she is not the only person who feels that way. Many people enjoy the convenience of texting while driving and that’s all they focus on. Most “texters” don’t look into the fact that if you’re giving the your phone attention, you aren’t giving the road your full attention and you are putting yourself and others at risk of endangerment. Texting slows down reaction time just as if you were under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Studies have been tested in order to prove this, in an article it stated “The new study, which entailed outfitting the cabs of long-haul trucks with video cameras over 18 months, found that when the drivers texted, their collision risk was 23 times as great as when they were not texting.” (Richtel 1) When you text you slow down you reaction time and as stated above the likelihood of being is involved in a car accident becomes much greater. In the public service announcement film titled “Cow” directed by Watkins-Hughes three teenage females were also involved in a tragedy because of texting while driving. Watkins-Hughes and the special effects team Zipline Creative used a lot of drama and realistic details such as blood and screaming along with rapid movement. Even death was incorporated into the PSA to get across to the target audience of teens what actually happens in a car accident caused by texting while driving.…

Texting puts the lives of the drivers around them at risk. If someone is texting and veers into the lane next to them, sometimes the driver in the other lane cannot move over and suddenly there is a crash and perhaps one or both of the people involved dies. This is what happened to a teenager in Rogers, Arkansas. Her name was Mariah West and the last text she received before she lost control of her car and died was “Where U At.” AT&T is now working with the mother of that teenager to help spread the word about texting and driving. Allstate is also making commercials on this widespread epidemic.…

As if driving with distraction wasn't dangerous enough, put a teenager with a cell phone behind the wheel and it gets much worse. Vehicle crashes are one of the top causes of death for 15-20 year olds (Thomas, 2009). Emma Vieira, 19, of Colchester, Vermont, left a woman in a coma and killed a dog as a result of an accident back in August of 2011. Vieira was texting at the time of the accident. About 6,000 deaths are caused by distracted drivers every year (Merchant, 2012). Many people, novice teen drivers and older experienced drivers alike, do not take the law of no texting while driving serious enough. Texting while driving should be avoided at all cost because it takes a drivers attention off of the road, it is dangerous to the public, and it can result in life changing consequences.…
