The Day Todd Parks Life Changed Forever
9 March, 2014
The Day Todd Parks' Life Changed Forever Their day began as usual, as my dad always said to me, "We all share the same process. Wake up, get dressed, yearn for sleep, get over it, drive to work, get the job done, go home and sleep." Their process was delayed when something tragic out of the ordinary happened. Around 4:30 A.M. Rancho was practically empty besides six men: Todd Parks, Bill Bertolucci, Scott Parks, Mike Sugars, Rick Krist, and Jim Krist. They were out on a large open concrete area that slanted at an awkward angle. The area was usually being occupied by trucks coming to pick up raw meat. The place was surrounded by what seemed to be a million chunks of butchered meat as well as a plethora of cows waiting to be slaughtered. During their normal morning banter an incident took place unexpectedly. "Haha, yeah cause that's totally true," my dad said sarcastically. "I swear it's completely true!" Rick Krist laughingly replied. My dad quickly responded in panic, "Rick, Todd! Todd's on the ground!" It was early in the morning on July 18, 2013 at the large and eerie Rancho facility when Todd Parks life was changed. "Suddenly Todd just collapsed, he just fell," my father explained to my family later that week. "Jim call 911! I think he's having a heart attack!" yelled Mike Sugars. Mike is a San Francisco police officer, at the time he was obviously off duty though. Everyone ran over to Todd with frightened looks, thinking they were about to lose a close friend. Instead of hesitating, they helped keep Todd alive, everybody knew CPR so Parks was in luck. Mike and Rick quickly knelt down and gave Todd chest compressions. My dad kept Todd's airway clear, and Scott carefully monitored his brothers breathing and counted the number of chest compressions. "After Jim contacted 911 it felt like we were waiting forever, waiting for something that would never come, but in reality the response time was only five minutes," said my father

In this story we meet Hugh Hitchcock who is the main character, his friends Rascal and Law McGinty who like him worked for another friend called Charlie that owned the W ranch. This were the old days, in which being a rancher and cattle owner, was one of the few ways to get wealthy and every cowboy knew how to become one if they really wanted to. It wasn’t until the big corporations and bankers got involved in the beef market that the cowboys like Hugh Hitchcock and his friends were prohibited to own cattle at first and slowly stripped down from the things they had long considered birthrights, lowering their wages to an unsubstantial amount and suffer exploitation by being forced to work long hours, pushing them far enough to a breaking point that made them organize and eventually go on strike to face the new evil that human greed had brought over them.…

It was unusually cold on this morning of September 11th, 2001, and my alarm had just went off. The odd but needed 5 am. was when I woke up, because my flight was going to leave around 8:30 and I needed to be there on time. The reason I was flying to San Francisco was I was having a family reunion with my dad, my step-mom, and my step-brothers. So, I jumped in the shower quickly with joy and excitement. I hadn't seen my family in forever since I had gotten a job as the assistant of the manager in Ralph Lauren Headquarters. I had just gotten my hair dried as I heard my phone ring. It was dad, making sure that I was on my way. I talked to him for a few minutes and then hung up. I glanced at the clock and realized…

(Pg. 25) At this point, many x-rays, and CT scans were taken. After the CT scan was over, the technician did not take Todd and Sonja back to the waiting room, in fact, he took them to the isolated hallway where a few chairs were lined up against the wall. Both Sonja and Todd knew that something was wrong with their little boy. Five minutes into sitting in the hallway, a white-coated man emerged from the imaging lab. The radiologist had said that Colton has a ruptured appendix, and would be needing emergency surgery. As Colton began screaming and crying for his father to not let the doctors take him, Todd was very confused and upset with God. “Where are you? Is this how you treat your pastors?! Is it even worth it to serve you?.” (Pg. 39) That's when everything hit Todd. “We waited too long. I might never see my son alive again.” (Pg. 40) After ninety long minutes of being hurt and confused, a female nurse in purple scrubs, stepped into the waiting room. “Is Colton’s father here?” (Pg. 42) Todd stood up. The nurse had asked Todd to come back. Colton was out of surgery and they couldn't get him to calm down. He was screaming and crying for his father. Sonja and Todd were so relieved to still have their little boy with…

Work was slow. Thats what I remember the most. I was the first to arrive for my shift (as always) and we hand't received any calls. I tried to catch up on some reading of the national headlines. My job didn't allow for much free time, so when I had some, I took advantage. Days like this were few and far between. Being a firefighter has taught me to appreciate all the down time I received. Today I should have been home decorating a nursery with my wife, but the night before I received a phone call asking if I could work overtime today. We have a little boy on the way, and were in need of all the extra overtime hours I can accumulate. Men started arriving for the new shift soon after. The ones who had been asleep at the station packed up and went home to enjoy a day off. By seven that morning I had a hand in preparing breakfast for the boys and had set down to eat with some of the people I loved the most. I sat at that table with twenty men who had proved time and time again that they would go through anything to have my back. These men were so very…

They began discussing how to get him to the gurney. They talked about taking out my bedroom window as they could not maneuver the gurney into my bedroom they would just lift him out the window. They had started an IV to bring up his blood pressure as it had dropped drastically to around 55 over 40. He started to perk up enough he could walk to the hallway to the gurney and there was no need to take out my window. I was grateful, not that my father was not worth it but what a mess that would be in a block house. They loaded up my dad and off they went, I followed in my…
