A Small Good Thing: Short Story
In the fictional short story entitled "A Small, Good Thing" by Raymond Carver is one that emotionally ties the reader to the story. The story opens in a bakery with the mother ordering a cake for her son Scotty for his birthday. The mother, Ann, describes the cake to the baker, who seems not to be a people person, in great detail; this showed the reader of the close relationship the mother and son shared. Ann tried her hardest to be friendly to the baker but he continued to give the feeling of dislike, so she placed her order and left.

The next day as Scotty walked to school with his friend while sharing a bag of chips, wondering what his buddy had gotten him for his special day. Then as he suddenly stepped off the curb and was hit by a car. Around a hundred feet later the car stopped and the driver looked back and saw Scotty get up and then sped away. His friend asked him if he was all right and he said that he was and then proceeded to go back home. As he laid there on the couch telling his mother what had happen his suddenly feel into a deep sleep.

His mother then called Howard, Scotty's father, explained what happened and then went to the hospital in the ambulance. When the father arrived the mother informed him of the condition of their son. The doctors ran many test and came to the conclusion the he suffered a hair line fracture of the skull, a mild concussion, and the deep sleep was due to the shock caused by the impact of the car. The doctor assured both parents that everything would be fine and not to worry. Howard was concerned but not nearly as much as Ann.

Ann suggested to Howard that he should go home and freshen up, so he did and said he would return within an hour. As he drove home he thought about his perfect life up until now. How he had the easy road and how abruptly that had changed. As he opened the door of the house the phone was ringing and he just knew it was the hospital and immediately felt guilty

    This baker is a lonely man, living with the memory of a once happy family now gone. Working in a family bakery only triggered his longing of wanting a family once again. To pull the baker back into this story, the baker calls the mother to have the cake picked up, but our friend the baker words it in a very cynical manner. He says along the lines of, “it’s ready. Come pick it up” (Note: the baker does not address himself as “the baker”, so he is a complete stranger to the mother on the phone). “It” being the cake. But with the death of her son, the mother is not in a normal state of mind and goes ballistic at the insensitivity of this mystery caller. The baker calls again but this time, the sound of machinery in the background hint that it was the baker that was calling. She prompted that she and her husband go up to the bakery. Upon arrival to the bakery door, the mother goes ballistic and yells at the baker that he did not know that her son had just died and his insensitivity to all of it. But, how was the baker supposed to know, with no recent news report, or anything, about a child’s death due to a hit and run.     In the story A Small Good Thing by Raymond Carver there are many epiphanies the three main characters have. The one that stood out to me was the one that happened to the baker. Early in the story the baker had a small relationship with the mother, Ann. He was supposed to just be making a birthday cake for Scotty, Ann's son. While Scotty was in the hospital the cake was made but never picked up. The baker had every right to be mad that the cake would go to waste so he called the Weiss's house multiple times reminding them to get the cake, and saying they forgot him.     “A small, good thing” by Raymond Carver brings a lot of vivid images to mind for me. Even though the writing is minimalistic, the story came alive. The lack of description enabled me to read the story and project characters from my own life in the place of the ones the author had created. From the beginning of “A small, good thing” I put my nephew, my niece, and my own son in the place of the boy in the story. The emotional tie to the stories outcome is what made me keep reading. For me, the meaning of the story is forgiveness. There is a family that has lost a beloved son, a baker who made a cake for someone who is yelling at him and refusing to pick up the cake, and a family waiting for their son to get out of surgery. The story follows Scotty’s mother as she deals with her son’s hospitalization. In the beginning the mother is very judgmental and alone in her pain, but throughout the story she opens up; first to her husband, and then to the baker. The reason I think the story is about forgiveness is that all the characters in the story must forgive to have the peace at the end. The mother and father must forgive the baker for his insensitive calls, and realize that he is a lonely man whose life revolves around the bakery. The baker must forgive the man and his wife for their anger and for not coming to pick up their cake. He has to let it go, and help the man and woman cope with the greatest loss of their lifetime.
