Searching for Bobby Fisher is based on the true life story of Josh Waitzkin, a seven year old boy, who fell in love with the game of chess. The Road Warrior (1981, dir. George Miller) begins with Max (Mel Gibson) and his dog getting tailed in what appears to be some kind of apocalyptic future. This can be seen through what they drive, the styling of the two guys on the bike (mohawks and strange outfits...even for the eighties) and the harsh look of the climate. Max is obviously worried about being tailed and so is his dog, which is why the puppy keeps looking back while Max tries to speed up. There’s threatening music too. They then encounter some wreckage that’s smoking, which Max easily navigates through while some of his other pursuers crash. Maybe they’re inexperienced drivers, but it shows the expendability of the antagonists. They might be dead but we’re not meant to linger on…

Scarface, starring Al Pacino, is the greatest film to ever hit the film industry. Scarface was released in December 1983 and is technically assumed to be a remake of the 1932 Scarface movie. The 1932 Scarface film was centered in Chicago during the Depression-era, however, the 1983 remake shifted the action from Chicago to Miami during the 1980s-era (Bayard). The directors did this on purpose; because the 1980s-era was the time the Mariel Harbor boat lift happened, thus in a approach to give the movie a new relevance (Berardinelli).…

Director Frank Darabont wrote and directed the film “The Shawshank Redemption” which was based on a novella by Stephen King. “The Shawshank Redemption” touches our hearts and creates warmth in our feelings as it makes us a member of the family as Frank Darabont tells the slow and gentle tale of loving friendship and hope. A Shawshank newcomer (White guy who worked in a bank) in 1946 Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), bangs up a 20-year friendship with a black guy named Red (Morgan Freeman) while in prison. It uses the sweet, soothing and soft voice overs of Red to include us in the story of men forming a community in prison. It isn’t one of those films where it offers us quick, in cloud nine feelings. It accomplishes in avoiding the familiar.…

When conducting an interview for the American Film Institute, actor Jeff Bridges, discussing 1941's Citizen Kane, said its director was "twenty-five years old, and he didn't know what he couldn't do...and Greg Toland gave him all the confidence in the world (2011, 0:28 sec.). Bridges was of course talking about the late, great Orson Welles. But who was Greg Toland? Well known in Hollywood at the time, Toland was a longtime cinematographer who had not only won an Academy Award for 1939's Wuthering Heights, but more importantly, had a unique unorthodox style and "was a devoted rebel against the conventions and rituals of big studio filmmaking" (Carringer, 1982, pp. 652-653). Needless to say, when the rookie filmmaker and veteran cameraman got together, movie magic was in the air. Indeed, their collaboration would result in a cinematic spectacle…

A movie like Fences only comes once in a great while. It is sort of an unconventional movie, unlike most. It is filmed almost as though it is a play, which is exactly how this film got its origins. Written by August Wilson in 1985, Fences started off as a Broadway play that ended up winning the Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama in 1987. This drama focuses on exploring the African-American experience and looks deep into the heart of race relations.…

But my hard work had started to pay off as I starting gaining towards the guy with dreads, and even passing him up. While going through the last 800 meters of the race, I ran as fast as my body could allow, passing up two more racers. Yet as I roughly pass the finish line, I notice that I’m the third person to pass the line. Knowing this many people come up to me congratulating me and asking me, “Where did you learn how to run that fast?” Even as the guy in dreads gave a hand motion like wave that meant he was surprised him…
