In the narrative of The Life of Frederick Douglass Slave, an American Slave, by Frederick Douglass slave owners rely on the dehumanization of slaves and revoke fundamental human rights in order to prevent slaves from rebelling which in turn allows the institution of slavery to continue. In order for the institution of slavery to continue all of the following participants need to perform their assigned roles. Traditionally, the slave master using violence and poor treatment to get his slave to obey his orders and as a result the slave obeys his master’s orders. However, when a slave does not perform his role and starts to rebel this threatens the authority of the master and weakens his role. When a slave rebels this poses great conflict…
Harriet Jacobs was born a slaver in 1813 in North Carolina. Her earliest memories were of a relatively happy family life, “fondly shielded... never dreamed that I was a piece of meat.” This was largely due to her father's reputation as (though a slave) a man of intellect and skill, and talents and optimism of her warm, nurturing grandmother. At six years old, she grieved her mother's death. Jacobs’s mistress, Margaret Horniblow, took her in and cared for her, teaching her to read, write, and sew (a promise from this woman to Jacob's dying mother). When Horniblow died, she willed (as property) twelve-year-old Jacobs to her niece, and Jacobs’s life took a dramatic turn for the worse.…
What is slavery? According to Dictionary.com it is the process in which “a person who is the property of and wholly subject to another; a bondservant”. Slavery is very unheard of in this millennium era for as it first occurred in 1619 when the first African Americans were brought over to North American colony of Jamestown and ended in 1865 when the thirteenth amendment was ratified and abolished slavery. For many of the persons in this new generation not a lot of reflection is focused on slavery and its cruelty. It is up to the few who are given the opportunity to share the truth of the violence and exploitation of slavery and the harm it caused not only to the newly founded country but specifically the South. Slavery was a chain of unjustifiable…
The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass uncovers an abundant amount of American history during this time of slavery. Douglass does this by the way he describes the slave family, the treatment and living conditions of slaves, and the master-slave relationship. The master often tears families apart by breaking them up. Douglass says that many times mothers have to leave their babies, before the child reaches one. He thinks this occurs to damage the bond of affection between a mother and child. Douglass also goes on to state that families are always at risk of being separated by being put up for sale. The treatment of the slaves is somewhat barbaric. If one of the slaves "misbehaves" in anyway, they will be punished by being hit with a…

Solomon Northup's "12 years a Slave" is based on the author's life story as a free man in the pre-civil North and was abducted and sold into slavery in the south. Northup was the son of a liberated slave, therefore making him a free man from birth. He lived and worked in Upstate New York, where he worked as a laborer and a greatly talented violin player. He was deceived into travelling with two con men to Washington D.C who wanted to sell him as a slave to the south. He was led to believe that he was going to play the fiddle at a circus but instead was drugged and sold into slavery at the Red River region in Louisiana. For 12 consequent years he served as slave to different masters. Most of his years as a slave was spent under the ownership of a slaver named Edwin Epps.…
While in this horrible life that slaves lived in many would recorded their encounters on how it was being a slave. In the book The Classic Slave Narratives you read how slaves are brutally beaten occasionally by their master or overseer. In the story of Mary Prince and Frederick Douglas you see all the heart ache that these slaves had to go through. There is similarity in which all slaves stories are the same but different in their own way. When learning about slavery we already know about all the bad things they went through but its all different when you actually hear it from their point of few. Which is really horrifying to learn the truth of what these slaves had to face.…
John Blassingame's essay entitled "The Slave Family" analyzes the composition of the nineteenth century slave family in America. The essay offers a perspective into the lives of slaves including their hardships, trials, and their plight for a sense of commonality. The essay begins with a sex ratio comparison between American slaves and slaves in other areas, such as Latin America, Brazil, and Cuba. It states that the male to female ratio was significantly more proportionate in the United States compared to the other areas. This suggests that there was a definite capability for stable family units amongst American slaves. However, as Blassingame pointed out, the factors that inhibited slaves from…

Life as a slave was very difficult. As many as 4.5 million slaves were working in Southern plantations in the early to mid-1800’s. There were two types of slaves; field slaves and house slaves. People think that being a house slave was easier but this proves that theory wrong. Slaves had terrible environments, were separated from family and friends, and were sometimes beaten to death. Whites knew that slavery was wrong and immoral. Though, it still continued.…
How could one unified country suddenly become so split apart? Every day I wonder what life I would lead if I was not forced to work in the heat of the South. Although factory work in the North would still be rigorous like the farming in the South, African Americans there are not treated as things, but people. In the North, I would not be frightened at the thought of being caught and tortured or killed if I tried to move to another place. I do not know if there will ever be a time when I would be able to be free because the North and South depend on each other for goods. If slavery is abolished, would the plantation owners in the South work to give the North crops? The Southern crops are needed to make the final products that are produced in…
Despite the abduction of millions of blacks from their homeland, slaves developed a strong familial camaraderie in America, retaining their African traditions as seen through dance, language, clothing and hairstyle. Although kinship ties were usually broken during the slavery process, blacks living on the same plantation created a strong-knit community that took part in festivals that highlighted the vibrant music and dancing of the African culture. Additionally, blacks expressed the individuality and uniqueness of their African tribe through their clothing and distinct hairstyles. The constant influx of black slaves into America guaranteed the survival of the African culture, as more and more generations of slaves replenished the African heritage (Yacavone 570). Although most evidence suggests slave culture was rooted in Africa, slave advocacy in adopting Christianity supports the theory of their assimilation into American culture.…
In common literature, motifs are reoccurring symbols that develop a certain aspect of the author’s intention. In The Awakening, Kate Chopin uses the motif of water to develop the theme of freedom. Similar to the Chopin, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the motif of yellow and white to develop the theme of appearance versus reality. In contrast, their themes may be different, however the intention of both authors successfully uses the motifs to develop the theme.…
