The Development of Technology
The Influence of Modern Technology on Society

現代科技對社會發展影響 (達人級範文)

The most general definition of technology is the application of science or knowledge to commerce and industry. Many fields of science have benefited from technology, as well as commerce and industry over the many centuries of human history. Perhaps the earliest known use of technology was in the Stone Age when the first knife or shovel was made from a piece of stone or obsidian(n. 【礦】黑曜石) . Technology has obviously come a long way since then. The development and technology has become a very important part of people’s lives. During the past few years, technology has grown in many ways and is probably better than ever before. People are always trying to find something new that will improve their lives dramatically.

Technology, the application of science, is not limited to only physical applications and physical tools. Benefits can be achieved through the application of new methods of thinking or new insights into the general knowledge base. The one of the biggest applications of this type is computers and the Internet. While computers are tangible (a. 可觸知的; 有形的) items, their ability to perform basic thinking processes much faster enables business and commerce to proceed much more efficiently. The Internet has no tangible component(n.零部件;元件) and yet it has changed the life of virtually every person on the planet. Information is available to anyone with access in the matter of (=several) moments and is up to date(adj. 最新的) and provides real time information about events around the world. Even communication has been revolutionized by the Internet. Not only can letters be sent through the Internet, but pictures, audio and video information can also be sent as well.

Technology provides an understanding, and an appreciation for the world around us. Most modern technological processes produce unwanted by products in addition to the desired products, which is known as industrial waste and pollution. While most material waste is re-used in the industrial process, many forms are released into the environment, with negative environmental side effects, such as pollution and lack of sustainability. Some technologies are designed specifically with the environment in mind, but most are designed first for economic or ergonomic(a. 人類工程學的) effects. Historically, the value of a clean environment and more efficient productive processes has been the result of an increase in the wealth of society, because once people are able to provide for their basic needs, they are able to focus on less-tangible goods such as clean air. Technology is a part of our daily life, it gives the opportunity to have easier tasks every day; we modernize the technology and the technology modernizes our standards of living. But the most important thing is to balance the pros and cons (贊成和反對的理由)of every situation and to not let the technology overwhelm(vt. 戰勝; 征服; 壓倒) us.

Broadly speaking, technology is how people modify the world to suit their own purposes. From the Greek word techne, meaning art or artifice or craft, technology literally means the act of making or crafting, but more generally it refers to the diverse collection of processes and knowledge that people use to extend human abilities and to satisfy human needs and wants. Technology has been going on since humans first formed a blade from a piece of flint, harnessed fire, or dragged a sharp stick across the ground to create a furrow for planting seeds, but today it exists to a degree unprecedented in history. Planes, trains, and automobiles carry people and cargo from place to place at high speeds. Telephones, television, and computer networks help people communicate with others across the street or around the world. Medical technologies, from vaccines to Stem Cell therapy, allow people to live longer, healthier lives. 200 years ago people’s average age of death was from 40 to 45. The term technology is a combination of the Greek words techne and logos. The former refers to art or craft while the latter refers to word or speech. When the term first appeared in the English vocabulary in the 17th century, it referred only to a discussion of applied arts which gradually came to be the object of designation. By the 20th century, the term had embraced a growing range of means, processes and ideas in addition to tools and machines. According to Sen(1999), technology is, “the means or activity by which human beings seek to change or manipulate their environment.” Over a long period of time the history of technology inevitably highlights the moments of innovation that show this cumulative quality as some societies advance, stage by stage, from comparatively primitive to more sophisticated techniques. Technology refers both to the artefacts created by humans such as machines and the methods used to produce those artefacts. So democracy can be viewed as social technology.…
