The Dyscophus Guineti: The Tomato Frog

The Dyscophus Guineti is a special species of amphibians, it is bright red and that is where it gets its nickname, the tomato frog. The plump little frog can be found in the moist and warm climates of Madagascar and it has been named an endangered species. Although the frog may seem like a wonderful and adorable pet at first glance, you should never judge a book by its cover. The tomato frog is different and similar to other species of frogs in many ways. You can tell by simply looking at the tomato frog that it is different and with a small amount of research, or watching it closely, you can make out many differences in the frogs habits. The tomato frogs are different from other frogs in many ways including: their physical appearance, defense, and hunting. The tomato frog, in many ways, are different from most frogs. There are many ways you can find out these differences but in some cases you can tell just by looking at the frogs side by side. For example, the physical appearances of the frogs can be deciphered from simply by looking at them. A adult tomato frog is bright red in color, the color is used as a warning to predators so that they know the tomato frog is toxic (Bauer, 1995). Most frogs hibernate during the winter but they can not do this unless they eat a lot of food. Frogs swim to the bottoms of bodies of water and eat vegetation small animals that live and grow there (2010, p. 2). The tomato frog is a bad swimmer compared to other frogs and toads. Instead of chasing their prey tomato frogs hunt without ever getting in the water. They are what some would call a lazy species of amphibians. They hide in vegetation along bodies of water to wait for prey. Instead of going to their food, they wait for their food to come to them (SEGEV,2012, p. 332-334). Obviously the tomato frog takes a very different approach when hunting than other frogs
