Mission Trip To Haiti
As I read the book Strength in What Remains and watched the film God Grew Tired of Us, my heart broke for the people suffering from wars and poverty in other countries around the world. As Deo described the suffering in his village, I was brought back to my mission trip to Haiti, where my eyes were truly opened to the world of poverty for the first time. I went into the trip anticipating it would affect my life, but I had no idea how much I would truly be changed. The most evident connection between Burundi or Africa and Haiti was the devastating poverty that overwhelmed the country. Deo described the way many people lived in poverty and couldn’t provide food for their families, which took me back to the memories of the Haitians I met on …show more content…
The organization our church partnered with is call United Christians International, which has had unbelievable effects on the region. The couple who created this organization were originally from our church and now live in Haiti running the many different programs they have set up. They are able to minister to the Haitians through nutrition programs, camps for the kids, the building of a church, and the construction of a small elementary school and university. A village that was once dominated by voodoo had been transformed to a community with many believers, filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit.
All this came about because of a few passionate people who were willing to follow God’s call and make a difference. This is something that has caused me to reflect upon my own life and my passions. I have always had a passion for working with kids, which is why I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, but after my trip to Haiti, I realized God had touched my heart for missions as well. Even though everything about Haiti was out of my comfort zone, it felt so right at the same time, and I was gripped with a connection to the people of Haiti that made it difficult to

During my high school years approximately around my sophomore/ junior year my basketball team including I myself attended the Hoops for Haiti fundraiser that Meredith Elementary school hosted. Hoops for Haiti helps aid the disaster relief fund that is held in Haiti. Hundreds of elementary school children paid $5 each for a chance to play with not only Neumann-Goretti’s women’s basketball team but also the men’s team too. All proceeds were meant to go directly to rebuild and fund schools in Haiti. I decided to talk about this specific service that I participated in because not only was it fun but I got to interact with kids younger than me and was able to put smiles on their faces, those who were there and hopefully those in Haiti knowing that they do have people who care and want to help them out in every way possible.…

In my corner of the world, poverty is present, however many are unaware of those who struggle to make ends meet. This corner of the world is considered the suburbs to many, but to some it is the place they struggle to survive. Just like Samson’s write, “The suburbs seem particularly designed to avoid facing the bigger issues of life” (Samson, 58). The two projects that I ventured out to be apart of were Restore Hope Ministries, and Voice of the Martyrs. These two organizations are truly bringing light to the darkest parts of world, and reaching those who are disenfranchised and on the periphery of society.…

Now, everything has its similarities and differences. The similarities between the U.S. and Haiti are, first, religions. The top religions in these countries are Protestant and Roman Catholic. Those are also two of the most popular religions in the world. Another similarity is having a similar ethnic group. Those ethnic groups are black and white, which is probably because of the area they are in. They both have a form of a republic. Even though America’s is a constitution federal republic with a strong democratic tradition, and Haiti is just a…

The second organization that I had the opportunity to volunteer for is Goodwill Rescue mission. They created this organization in 1896. Under the leadership of Rev. Lawrence Sutherland, the purpose of the organization moved from being a struggling institution to one with a nationwide reputation. They shared the love of God in Christ by providing food, shelter, spiritual guidance and instruction for the poor and the homeless in Newark. According to Goodwill Rescue mission, they affiliate with helping the individuals directly rather than send them someplace else to fend for themselves. The program is also working with some of these individuals to get them back on their feet to fend for themselves. They have to go through programs if any of them…

This summer, I was blessed with an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to travel to Haiti on a mission trip. Of course, I was slightly nervous about traveling to a third world country, where I did not know the language, and the only people I would know would be the people from the church that I was traveling with. However, I knew this would be a life changing experience, so I took the leap! I am so grateful I did because every second was worth it! Our mission was to work with orphans, help homeschool English speaking children, and meet with the women’s group of Grand Savann Christian Church.…

Haiti is a country struggling to survive daily life and after the 2010 earthquake, struggles even more then before to maintain the health and wellbeing of its citizens. An overwhelmingly large percent of Haiti’s population lives below the poverty line and suffers form malnutrition, anemia and other diseases. Haiti has about 25 physicians and 11 nurses per 100,000 population. (Wikipedia.org) This is a very sad situation for the citizens of Haiti because the incident of disease is so high and medical care so low, one could imagine the mortality rate for disease that are other wise curable is unnecessarily high. After researching quite a few cites I could not find a health plan for the Haitian citizens other than mandated access to healthcare. There are many organizations coming together to build hospitals, create jobs and promote better health and hygiene practices.…

I have come to understand that I have an innate urge to help those more disadvantaged than I. I believe that God has placed this urge in my so that I can be an instrument of his will. We all have the potential and are called to me such an instrument and that calling comes in different avenues for each person. I believe that I have found one such avenue. I learned God understands and know the potential in each person and will task him or her with only the things they have the power to handle. I pray that as the years go forth and I enter into my professional career this experience and other experience will grant me the knowledge on how to create a nonprofit organization that will help the children of Haiti gain a proper education. Throughout the text, “Changing the Face of Poverty,” Diana George is certainly precise when claiming that the common representations of poverty limit our understanding of it. She expresses that most of our knowledge of poverty becomes misinterpreted due to advertisements, media, and images. Consequently, the way that we look at poverty focuses around that in which is in third-world countries, but poverty can be anywhere, even in your backyard. American citizens are the audience for the text, because Americans typically portray as being wealthy, happy people who are oblivious to the poverty-stricken areas surrounding them. Diana George’s, “Changing the Face of Poverty” expresses to its readers that non-profit organizations such as Habitat for…

These people were malnourished, sickly, underserved, and lacking the necessities of life. I remember thinking how lucky I am to have the simple pleasures of a hot shower, shelter, clean clothing, and the ability to visit a doctor. That is the moment I knew working in an underserved community is my calling. I wanted to help these people and provide for them. I wanted to provide them the healthcare they needed. From the little girls’ single touch, to the harsh reality that many people are starving and lacking health care, this moment alone helped define my experience with underserved communities.…

My last article talks about how can poverty be the inspiration for people to be evangelists, and how it leads people to be more excited to see how people can be extremely poor and still happy. Evangelisation was always seen as the fruitless job that people had to give up everything they owned to be in. but as it is mentioned in the article “what really amazed him (the seminary student) was his literal poverty-he owned nothing, yet was supremely happy.” This accident inspired lots of people to go in the way of evangelisation, to spread God’s word. The church saw many poor handicapped people, so they decided to fund 120 communities world wide providing handicapped people. Which shows how poverty led the church to help the people and spread God’s word. This article made me think of how I can make poverty my inspiration, so I decided to collect a dollar anytime I get my allowance and donate it to handicapped people or the church by the time I’m eighteen. This article made me stop and think for a while of my life of my life and how shallow it can get sometimes, which touched me deeply and inspired me to make a change in my self and my life which Is the reason why I chose this article, as I said before this article made me think and know how lucky I am but it also made me think of others and how people are living such a hard life and how they’re still living happily which made me think that I should be extremely happy because I have a loving family and amazing friends that love me truly for whom I am, which affected me deeply and get me to think of changing my life and make it a life that is worth to…
