The Ecstasy Of St. Francis
Our trip to the Frick Collection was very great. Henry Frick started his art collection as soon he got his fortunes. The Frick has a high-quality collection of paintings and fine furniture housed in six galleries within his former residence. Frick wanted his mansion to become a museum. The paintings are still arranged the Frick placed them. The collection features some of the paintings by European artists, there also works of sculpture and porcelain. [1] I really took an interest in the works during the renaissance movement. There was one oil painting called The Ecstasy of St. Francis.
The Ecstasy of St. Francis is a painting by Italian Renaissance master Giovanni Bellini. Bellini started this painting in 1475 and completed it in 1480. The painting is oil on panel that shows the influence of Andrea Mantegna, who was the painter's brother-in-law. There is a signature “IOANNES BELLINVS “on a small, creased carta visible in the lower left corner.

Francis was very poor in the beginning of his sainthood and used to participate in isolated spiritual retreats. The painting shows a symbolic representation of the saint. The animals in the painting represent the saint love for nature and animals.[1] The Ecstasy of St. Francis shows Francis in a religious ecstasy, whether receiving the stigmata, as Millard Meiss suggested, or perhaps singing his Canticle of the Sun, as Richard Turner has argued.[2]
The cave may relate Francis to Saint Jerome, He lived in a cave or cell. The stream in the left middle-ground symbolizes Moses , and the tree in the middle of the painting represents the Burning Bush. [3] In the distance you could see Jerusalem. This the meditation of St. Francis on the Book of Genesis. He uses the natural elements like the grape vines and rocks. The color pallet he uses is great for the atmosphere in this

The wing that I felt most interested in was the 17th & 18 th Century pieces. Biblical subjects were the usual subject of these pieces and the quality and vividness of the art caught my eye with each new design I saw . A piece that was very interesting was "Martha Rebuking Mary for Her Vanity" done by Guido Cagnacci . The oil painting shows a distraught Mary Magdalene deserting vanity in order to drive out the demon. At the top of the picture is an angel striking out a demon away in order to allow Magdalene to repent for her sins . Another religious piece that I enjoyed was the "The Birth of St . John the Baptist" done by Bartolomé-Esteban Murillo. The image was of a baby John the Baptist being attended to by nurses while angles descend onto the scene . Also shown in the image was Elizabeth resting in a bed.…

This is yet another well-known story from the Bible. It shows a child kneeling on the ground embraced in the arms of someone who means a lot to him. According to Frank this painting symbolized a disobedient son who left his father and home to be on his own and when he had nothing left he crawled back expecting his father to turn him away. But he did not open his arms to let him back in. The painting demonstrates the Baroque style. The emotion and drama involved show the most heartfelt part of the story, not the pain or betrayal only the love of a father and son. The light is brightest on the father and son. Here he interprets the Christian idea of mercy with an extraordinary solemnity, as though this were his spiritual testament to the world (Web Gallery of Art,…

The first panel is the donors that commissioned the painting by Campin, the second panel is the same Annunciation scene of Mary and Gabriel but depicted quite differently, and the third panel is Saint Joseph. This painting pays close attention to clarity and detail, with varying colors and realism. The painting is in oil, and has a style that reflects the Northern Renaissance period. For example, the angel and Mary do not have halos, and it lacks linear perspective. The lack of halos, as well as Mary’s face (which doesn’t seem too happy about the fact that she is about to conceive Christ’s child) could relate to the religious separation that Northern Europe was experiencing during the Renaissance. Northern Renaissance art is very well known for its symbolism, and in this painting nearly every object is symbolic of spiritual ideas (Harris). For example, lilies represent Mary’s virginity, Joseph’s tools represent the Passion of the Christ, and the extinguished candle represents God taking human…

    The Annunciation Analysis

Many of the objects depicted in High Renaissance paintings were there for a reason. In “The Annunciation,” Mary is the largest figure and the main focus. She is shown facing front, with her head tilted toward the floor and her eyes almost closed. In her left hand she is holding the Bible, representing her devoutness to God, her right hand is raised, all fingers pointing up. Archangel Gabriel is on the left side of the panel, shown smaller and wearing the ornate vestments of a priest. His clothes symbolize the similarity between him and the clergy of the Church: they both share the word of God. They are both wearing very loose fitting clothing that have many folds. The Holy Trinity is represented here by God, baby Jesus carrying his cross, and a dove, often a symbol of the Holy Spirit. They are all connected by seven rays of light, flowing directly from God’s mouth onto Mary. The seven rays represent the seven days it took God to create the universe. Gold is used as a symbol to represent divinity (Smith). White lilies in a vase between angel Gabriel and Mary often symbolized Mary’s purity. Written on the vase is “Ave Regina,” representing the Hail Mary prayer. The Latin words written in gold are archangel Gabriel telling Mary, “‘Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus’” (Luke 1:31). Symbolism can also be found in the frame of the painting. The three arches at the…

The painting is Tempera on Wood and uses distinct bright colors to represent the wealth of the people who are in it. This adoration has biblical connotations and uses historical traditions for example making the Virgin Mary where a blue cloak. All of the figures were designed to create geometric design on the panel. Botticelli does not pay much attention to linear texture. This painting was commissioned for a funerary chapel in the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence.…

I went to “Monet and the Seine” exhibition in Houston Fine Arts Museum in 2015, after that, he becomes one of my favorite artists in Europe. Also, he is one of the most important artists in France and a founder of the impressionism (Stuckey, 1995). The mid 19th century is a tough time for people because in that period, people lived in the darkness of the war. However, most of the Monet’s artwork reflected the positive images. He wants to inspire and help people by using his paintings, and bring them out from the…
