The Effects Of Different Storage Environments On Organic And Non-Organic Bananas
The aim for this experiment is to investigate the effects of different storage environments on organic and non-organic bananas, to see which one lasts the longest over a period of time. The study was separated into 5 groups that were each labeled to a location in a standard family home that would, over time, begin to affect the overall form and characteristics of the bananas. Throughout the experiment, it was found that “Group 2 – Impact of Air Exposure,” lasted longer than any other group. Following the investigation, it is evident that the Ziploc bags used in the experiment preserved the bananas for a longer duration, showing that storing bananas in Ziploc bags is the number one method in preservation.

Bananas and other fruits ripen due to the hormone ethylene, which breaks down sugars and pectin, a substance that allows bananas to remain hard over time. When bananas start to break down after reaching maximum growth, it begins the start of significant biochemical and physiological transformations, such as skin discoloration, internal softening of the banana, sweetening, and aroma development. The differences between organic and non-organic bananas do not contribute to whether one or the other may spoil faster; however, it must consider the fact that organic bananas do not have the chemical preservatives, thus can spoil at a faster rate. Nature and outside contributors to the spoilage of the banana depends on the amount of oxygen present for the fruit to continue ripening or the temperature that could halt the enzymatic activity within the banana. Different locations of where bananas are stored greatly impact the duration to which the banana will last and still be edible. When exposed to chilling temperatures, for example, ethylene is more prone to damage the skin and quality of the banana due to the electrolyte leakage of the skin …show more content…
For safety precaution, it is important to wear gloves to prevent contamination of the bananas to prevent potential allergic reactions from the bananas (latex nut allergy). Another precaution is making sure that the bananas are kept away from animals to avoid infestation.

Hypothesis:
Throughout the process of researching the ripening of bananas, it is found that storing bananas in different environmental temperatures will greatly affect the ethylene enzymes within the bananas. The different storage methods of the bananas will greatly affect the overall ripening of the bananas due to lack of oxygen, or to the un-predictable acts of nature. Thus, we can infer that the bananas in the plastic bags will surpass the other subjects due to the restriction of ethylene gas from reaching the rest of the fruit and prematurely ruining the texture and quality of the

    La Hacienda Musa was a long way from Leuven, Belgium. But for Maria Keller, the transition was as natural as it could be. She had spent twenty years in Leuven studying banana genetics at the Catholic University of Leuven’s Laboratory of Tropical Crops, the world center of banana research. She had learned about the challenges the banana-growing industry faced from a variety of diseases, why bananas seemed to be especially susceptible, and how difficult it is to develop new strains of the world’s most popular fruit. But after two decades of study, Maria was ready for something new. She did her homework, packed her few possessions, and headed to her newly purchased banana plantation in Costa Rica. To say that La Hacienda Musa was already a banana plantation was overstating the case. In fact, Maria owned 100 hectares of previously cleared land on which bananas had never been grown. Because this plot was isolated from established banana-growing operations in Costa Rica, the land should be reasonably free from the most important and virulent of banana diseases, Black Sigatoka, a fungal leaf blight.
