The Ethics Of Texting And Driving
Texting and driving makes you 23 more times likely to crash? Thousands of people get injured everyday from people who decide to text and drive. With a mistake so simple to fix why can’t humans put their phones down? The following essay will include; Sarah Edwards Story, apps that prevent texting and driving, and statistics and facts. Sarah Edwards was 18 years old as she read her last text message, when her Honda Accord went into the other lane and crashed into the rear end of a logging truck. The truck driver dialed 911 immediately saying “she never looked up” from her phone during the crash. She died instantly from the impact of the crash. Researchers heard about this accident and decided to do surveys. Survey result showed that two-thirds of the survey members say, they have seen, or been the ones texting and driving (Consumers Report, 22). Studies show that 66 percent of people have reduced or stopped behaviors that are related to texting and driving from stories like, Edwards fatal car crash (Consumers Report, 24). …show more content…
“One way eliminating driving distractions is to install a no text- app”(prefessionalsaftey). Certain texting apps cause all calls to go to voice mail when the driver is in a movie vehicle. “Some apps also send automated messages the say “ Sorry, I can’t text right now, I’m driving””(prefessionalsaftey). These apps could help significantly stop texting and driving but people have to download the app on their own. These texting apps cause some controversy, people believe that is violating their personal freedom (prefessionalsaftey).     The number of people who have been affected by texting and driving is dramatically increasing. Clearly the laws, punishments, and education up to this point have not done much to change how people view texting and driving. Due to the facts that have been revealed about texting and driving, it is imperative that the government takes strong action to fight this rising epidemic. Although it may be near impossible to keep people off their phones, it is vital that stricter laws are put against it. Law enforcement, including police and the judicial system must put their foot down and stand by it. All ages must be targeted as well. Even though older people may think they are more experienced behind the wheel, accidents can happen and they should not be able to use their phones either. It should also no longer be a question whether it is a safe time to pick up the phone and send a quick text. The punishments must be toughened, forcing people to face harder consequences if caught texting while driving behind the wheel. License suspension would be a strong preventive in order for people to keep both hands on the wheel. On top of the new laws that should be put against texting while driving, drawing attention and focus to people who have suffered tragedies from texting and driving could be a key part to prevent more from happening. Making sure people are fully educated, enforcing stronger laws, and following through with stricter punishments are the first things that need to be done in order to keep people off their phones.
