The Falling Girl
“The Falling Girl” is abstract and artistic depiction of young woman’s journey to the ground after releasing her grip from the railing of a skyscraper. She does not fall in traditional fashion but rather floats at a decided speed waving to the skyscrapers tenants as she passes. Her descent marked with quick verbal exchanges and internal musings of the ever-changing social classes gathered on the various floors. Although outwardly she is falling, during much of the prose there is a deeper theme akin to a failed attempt at personal ascension. The themes of individual vs society and free will vs fate envelope the character as she struggles to find her place in the world before the clock stops ticking and she meets the ground. In her final moments, …show more content…
While young and confident at the outset, she is defiant to conformity ““No, thanks, friends. I can’t. I’m in a hurry”” (Buzzati) she says, not to be slowed by the distractions of others along her vertical path. Passing the top floors of wealthy charming people, she inherits a sense of pride and self-assurance from their glances. “The beautiful people, then, were interested in her and that filled her with satisfaction” (Buzzati). She is decidedly happy with her choice to be independent and free; until the ground gets closer, the sky darker, and the hour later. ““They’re waiting for me down there,” she answered, “I can’t stop. Forgive me”” (Buzzati). Passing the lower working classes she becomes much more unsure of it now as she laughs with hesitance. Encountering the many other female comets headed for the ground she feels the comparison and is uneasy. “It was a contest, then. And she only had a shabby little dress while those other girls were dresses smartly like high-fashion models…” (Buzzati). Finding her place among the others is difficult and she fixates on the idea that somewhere at the end of her journey is a place and a party just for

First thing’s first, anyone who encounters this wonderfully constructed book, What They Fought For, by James M. McPherson, must acknowledge his great work. McPherson is one of the few historians worth reading; this is coming from a Kinesiology major who wants little to nothing to do with historians. I strongly believe that this marvelous piece of art work has no flaws or weaknesses, yet has many strong points.…

“Falling From Grace” follows a young girl, named Grace, who get’s lost at Point Nepean. This book was written by Jane Godwin. It shows us to never form a hasty opinion about anything, since it will never turn up like anything, similar to reality and that doing so can bring about a considerable measure of unneeded drama. The characters in the book who did a great deal of this would be; Kip, the police, people in the area and the news reporters.…

However, their lives were not affected like hers was. They are not awake in the night, but rather sleeping in the arms of their loved ones. This contrast between our protagonist and her supporters is evident to the speaker and then to us by surrounding these women in love and pleasant dreams, "dreaming themselves in elegant furs racing towards Moscow, Chicago, some heady excitement!" (lines 14-16) while our heroine is dragged down by words such as grainy, and "jailhouse train" (line 18). We are left to believe that she sacrificed her normal everyday life to progress and innovate those around her; while these women whose lives she has undoubtedly affected continue on "racing" towards cities of elegance, she races towards a man who no longer loves her as stated in lines 3-4 "rides to the city to see her old lover-/though it's clear from the ending he has broken things…

Winning a World Series is the most coveted prize for any team in major league baseball. The “Fall Classic” of 1919 represented the power of greed. This series displayed a form of greed that may never be reached again in any professional sport. Most athletes possess the admirable greed of winning and succeeding. In 1919, six players of the Chicago White Sox showed a form of greed that rarely occurs in such a respectable game. What most professional baseball players never get to experience was traded for cash incentives. Through all the persuasion and temptation for something of monetary value that some would consider worth more than a world championship, two men exhibited that true love for the game of baseball and loyalty to one’s team can help overcome such temptations. This series not only represented the utter greed of 6 players, but the loyalty, strength, pride, and respect for the game of baseball that can counteract such a heinous form of greed.…

I step off the train in Bombay, India. I look down at my feet where I notice my feet covered in dust from the dirty ground that resides beneath me. The dust is swirling around my ankles like a quiet storm and it is then that I notice the quiet around me. So small and tugging at the very bottom of my shirt is how I first noticed her. She is a young, quiet girl and she is staring up at me – dead on. She is begging for attention. At first, I am not sure what to make of her. I look at her, long. I cannot help but notice her protruding stomach and her jutting bones that signal both starvation and desperation. Her clothes are ragged, and ripped, and they make life’s appreciation become real. I glance around and see hundreds of both children and adults looking the same way. She pulls her hands to her mouth signaling she is hungry and asking for food. It was then, in a mere moment, life seized around me.…
