Chapter 1
Introduction
Dengue is the most common arthropod-borne viral (arboviral) illness. It is transmitted by the mosquitoes of the genus Aedes which are widely distributed in tropical or sub-tropical countries particularly in the Philippines. The AedesAegypti Mosquitoes are the vectors of Dengue fever and the eggs have the ability to survive desiccation for long periods of time, allowing eggs to be easily spread to new locations thus contributing to the rampant spread of the disease when left unchecked. Death tolls in the Philippines over Dengue matters reached at least 42,207 dengue case, 193 of them fatal, had been recorded from January to the first week of June 2013 (Department of Health, 2013). This study uses the benefit we can get from the Makahiya (mimosa pudica) roots extract to prevent the propagation of mosquito eggs. This study will serve as the basis for future plans of action by the school administrators, community officials and the society with regards to the necessary actions for exterminating the mosquito eggs and larvae.
Throughout the history, many plants have been used as an alternative insecticide, ovicide, larvicide, and repellants. The increasing number of dengue cases not only in our country but also to other countries all over the world. Experiencing the abnormal change in weather is not of recent origin to us. In that case, they are harder to intercept in flight that is why it is more advisable to focus on the places where they lay their eggs and exterminate them as early as possible.
Statement of the problem
This study aims with the investigation of Makahiya as an alternative larvicide for mosquito larvae.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What are the effects of Makahiya extract to the mosquito larvae after having been exposed to:
