Being of a family of prestige in the town they are from, Libby and Nick had plenty of friends in high places. In the beginning of the movie Libby’s
husband Nick fakes his own death and frames her for his murder. So when the officers come to Libby’s house to officially arrest and charge her with the murder of her husband, they bring her lawyer with them. He warns her not to say anything about what happened without discussing it or without him being there. This illustrates the prohibition of self-incrimination. The movie moves on to a courtroom scene, this shows the right to a grand jury.
While, Libby was wrongfully convicted of her husband’s murder, she did have a fair trial.
The prosecutors and defendants all gathered all of their evidence. In the end the evidence against her was just too strong. At the end of the movie Libby finally shoots Nick in self-defense and he dies. Due to double jeopardy, even if she didn’t kill him in self-defense, she couldn’t be tried
Thayer 2 twice for his murder. She already did the time for his murder, and in the eyes of the government
Nick is already dead and technically you cannot kill someone twice
