In 1095, the First Crusade is initiated when Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus requests help in reconquering from the Seljuk Turks the lost territory of Asia Minor. Pope Urban II at the Council of Clermont calls upon the princes of Christendom for an armed “pilgrimage” to recover Jerusalem from the Muslims. Among his goals is the strengthening of the Gregorian papacy by bringing the Greek Orthodox Church under papal authority. This particular crusade began after Pope Urban II speech was given. Eventually a monk by the name of Peter the Hermit began to preach of crusades. Peter was characterized as charismatic and passionate; his passion is what drew his followers to also partake in the actions of other crusaders. He appealed not just to a select portion of travel-ready combatants but to all Christians -- men, women, children, the elderly, nobles, commoners -- even serfs. Peter was known to give enthralling sermons that fired the religious zeal in his listeners.
