There are many different events being taught in History class every year; World War 1 being one of the main events that’s happened in the past. On June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo, Francis Ferdinand, the Archduke of Austria Hungary was assassinated by a Serbian terrorist group. This was supposedly the cause of World War I, but it was just the spark that started the war in a Europe already inflamed by the true causes of the great war. The major causes that started World War 1 was Imperialism, Nationalism, Alliances, and Militarism. It was these four main influences that created the provoking state in which the assassination of Francis Ferdinand set off the war.

The purpose of imperialism was and is to build up national wealth and influence by owning colonies. Both France and Britain had many colonies in Africa and Asia. In the 1880s and 1890s, Germany and Italy decided they wanted a colonial empire too. This global competition for land caused confrontations and conflicts in many places. It caused the war because Austria blamed Serbia for the killing of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Then Austria declared war on Serbia, the Russian army got ready to help Serbia defend itself against the attack and Germany sends a demand to Russia ordering it to hold back from helping Serbia. Then Germany declared war on Russia. The French army is put on a war footing getting ready to fight a German invasion. After all that Germany declares war on France and invades Belgium, Britain orders Germany to withdraw from Belgium and the Germans did not listen.
