Thesis: There is major debate both for and against using the fracking method to extract natural gas from the ground, but I propose that the federal government establish, monitor, and regulate environmental and health risks, and then create a minimum standard which the states are required to follow. Background: In the 1940’s the Halliburton Corporation developed a process to revitalize well production and prolong the life of wells nearing the end of their production cycle. The fracturing process, called “fracking”, pumps a mixture of water and sand, along with some chemical additives, at high pressures to create additional fractures in the sedimentary rock.…
well that is no longer producing. Next we discuss the rise of fracking. We present here a history…
My name is Santiago Arellano, and I am a resident of Broomfield Colorado. I would like to present my opinion on the North Park Hydraulic Fracturing. Hydraulic Fracturing is a very ingenious way of removing oil from the deep Shale, which we have been unable to reach. This method, also known as Fracking, is also very small. It starts out with a drill rig and a holding tank for the first 3 months, but then once the well is dug, it looks like another oil drill, and will continue to draw oil from the ground for the next 20-30 years. Fracking involves the use of radioactive materials, explosives, and hazardous chemicals. I believe that, as Fracking becomes more popular, and less scrutinized, the watch over it will become less strict, and these materials will leak into groundwater, or into our rivers and lakes.…
Ever wonder why earthquakes are caused? Why does water in certain areas smell or taste like a chemical gas? The most likely reason for both of these effects is fracking. Hydraulic fracturing, as known as fracking, is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside (Dong). According to many recent research studies fracking is very harmful to the environment and shouldn’t be done here in Coppell, but how so?…
One good effect that fracking has had and Gold noted, is that fracking has significantly improved our economy by creating more jobs for people. For many years our economy had suffered with plummeting unemployment rates, but about 10 years ago when fracking came about it was like a savior had come because fracking provided more jobs and in turn lowered the unemployment rate. In some ways fracking is a better alternative for the environment. Burning coal is very hazardous to the environment because of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Fracking does not produce CO2 emissions because it is natural gas that is being produced and thus it is technically cleaner…
Water intensity is lower for fracking than other fossil fuels. Expensive oil keeps the cost of natural gas appealing because it is cheap and decreases our dependency on foreign fuel sources. Because we are now relying on gas since fracking is so effective and because of its low prices, we are no longer trying to find alternative energy sources. When we were worried about not being…
A controversial new method of extracting natural gas from the earth has become a danger for Americans. This method is called Hydraulic Fracturing, or Fracking. This drilling has made it possible to retrieve methane gas trapped in the shale rock that lays thousands of feet below the ground. For some, fracking can be seen as a good thing for our country. Fracking is boosting the nation’s economy, creating jobs and energy export opportunities, and strengthening the energy independence of the United States. Although it may help in some aspects, it comes at a very high cost to the American people. Fracking is extremely harmful to the water supply, the environment, and the population.…
Some people say fracking destroys the environment but fracking provides jobs, energy to the U.S. and, it is a good way to get energy. So now fracking is not so bad it provides so much to the U.S. and to the U.S. citizens. In the end, fracking for natural gas is not a bad idea yes it has some problems but gas coupons are trying to resolve the…
To know why fracking pollutes the environment, everyone must first understand the fracking process and what is left behind as a result. The fracking process can be summed up in five steps: the first step is to drill a hole, the second step is to pump the hole with a pressurized mixture of water, sand, and chemicals, the third step is to take out the mixture out of the hole, the fourth step is to reel in the natural gas that comes out of the hole, the final step is to insert the water mixture back into the hole and seal it back up (Huffman). The fresh water that has been used up in the Fracking process cannot be purified again through neither the water cycle nor the water treatment plants, as a result, the non-biodegradable water that is in the holes has been known to contaminate aquafer’s water which has led to radioactive and contaminated water being used for everyday use (“Fracking”). Not only does fracking affect the land and water, but it also affects our air by the escaping four percent of all the gas being collected which mainly consists of methane gas; methane gas is known as a greenhouse gas which is twenty-five times more dangerous to the environment than carbon dioxide (Huffman). Fracking is a contributor to the rising temperatures around the globe through the effects done by the pollution of methane gas into the atmosphere. The…
To begin with, Fracking is incredibly repulsing thing to start doing. Not only is it an atrocious way to get materials, ruins the environment, displaces animals, slims down food supply, and causes mountains to look revaluating. Honestly why would someone in their right mind want to do this?…
Fracking is where 40-56% of the natural gases come from. http://www.what-is-fracking.com/what-is-hydraulic-fracturing/ Fracking isn't the best type of mining because there are very many environmental and health damages that are at risk of using this type. Some of the many environmental damages are; contamination of groundwater, air pollution, exposure to toxic chemicals, waste disposal, and fracking induced…
There are still many setbacks to fracking for example earthquakes, water pollution, air pollution, and health problems that need to be worked out in order to make it the best it can be. By using different chemicals during the process of fracking can make it cleaner and less destructive to the environmental. Another way to solve the many setbacks could be to not use fresh water as apart of the mixture that is drilled into the Earth to get the oil and gas. That way we are not struggling for clean water, and getting sick from drinking water. The last solution would be to move the fracking sites away from houses, so it does not harm the people greatly. Fracking could be an amazing way of securing a new and efficient way of getting energy to use if we first fix some problems of the…
I agree Mr. Murdoch's opening statement against political correctness and his assertion that America is an influential force for the "vindication of human values". However, I am disagree with his viewpoint on fracking. Although I can see the merit in his view that fracking will allow a great many people to benefit economically from it, he never mentions the environmental implications of it. I think that the importance of the preservation of the environment while we still can merits restrictions on the use of fracking. It's an environmentally unsound technique that is wasteful and unsustainable. Additionally, it also presents safety and health hazards to those who live near fracturing sites. I agree that we should strive to minimize both intellectual…
In the United States fracking is a helpful way to make clean energy, make heat quicker, and opens up many opportunities. Without this Fracking people would still be using coal and wood to heat their homes, workplaces, and schools. As the generations get older someday someone might come up with a substance that makes heat quicker and does not cause water pollution. There could be something out there right now that could be the new way of making clean energy, makes heat quicker, and good produce more jobs. The world is a mystery waiting to be discovered.…
They believe that with the use of the large deposits of natural gas, there will be less usage of fossil fuels. With the fossil fuels being used over a greater period of time, research can be done to discover cleaner alternative energy sources. While natural gas is still detrimental to the environment, it does cause less carbon dioxide emissions than fossil fuels, so this is a common argument for fracking. While this argument makes sense if you are comparing gas to fossil fuels, it still pollutes the environment more than energy sources like solar and wind power. http://www.yaleclimateconnections.org/2015/05/pros-and-cons-of-fracking-5-key-issues/…
