“Friend-Zoned”
Often when many strive for relationships, they end up in the friend zone. The Friend Zone represents a state that occurs when one desires more than a friendship with a significant person, while the other simply yearns for a platonic relationship. This term can have many different meanings depending on the type of the individual. The Friend Zone can be both a good and a bad thing based on the kind of person who experiences this specific relationship state. For many, the Friend Zone is comparable to a jail cell. The more they reach out to a special “friend”, the farther they become trapped inside the frustrating zone. Their desired other half sees them only as a friend. They do not see their unnaturally nice gestures as a sign that they want to take their friendship to the next level. Charlie and Sue represent the perfect example for a situation similar to this. Charlie and Sue have known each other since birth. They live across from street from each other. Additionally, they attended the same elementary, middle, and now high school. They are currently enrolled in the 10th grade and their friendship has grown immensely. Charlie has known since his 5th grade year that he has wanted more than just a friendship with Sue. His attraction towards her increases with every passing day, but he has never had the courage until recently to express his true feelings. Sue on the other hand looks into Charlie’s eyes and sees nothing short of the greatest friend she has ever had, but nothing more than that. Charlie is the brother she never had; he represents the person she can go to with any problem, fear, or thought in the world. She desires no change in their relationship, because she fears any change would negatively alter their strong friendship.
