The Future Of Happiness Analysis
The current age that the world lives in is known as the “Information Age”; also known as the Computer Age, or the Digital Age. This name derives from the shift to technology usage and its rapid advancements. Today, however, the world turns to technology more than ever. despite technology’s convenience and aid, it can also be destructive to a society. In the essay, “The Future of Happiness”, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s erudite tone and parallelism reflects his assertion that the advancement of technology comes with consequences. In the essay, “The Future of Happiness”, Csikszentmihalyi forms a parallel between historical technological advancements and the modern-day conflict of the world’s dependence on technology. Csikszentmihalyi begins by forming connections with the discovery of genetics and natural “genetic engineering”. Ancient farmers’ discovery of genetics and genetic engineering started by manipulating grapes to make them more desirable amongst consumers. He quotes Plato from his book, Republic, to further support his assertion. He quotes, “‘The best of either sex should be united with the best as often, and the inferior with the inferior as seldom as possible;-- Now these goings on must be a secret which the rulers only know, or there will be a …show more content…
Thus, the motive behind the title, “The Future of Happiness”. Technology’s advancements have considerable benefits. However, if society chooses to genetically modify children, there will be no future to happiness. A child cannot be perfect, but cannot be happy either when he/she has received “undesirable” traits.     Happiness, the intangible emotion that we all desire. Is there proof that this emotion even exists? Eduardo Porter has written an essay titled “What Happiness Is”. In this essay Mr. Porter took the time to study the emotion of happiness that we all experience in life. He makes an attempt to question not only his reasons as to why he is happy, but to have the reader question their own sense of happiness as well. While searching for the proof of this feeling Eduardo Porter reflects upon his own personal experiences, professional studies and ultimately decides that his questions may never be answered. Porter states that, “most psychologists and economists who study happiness agree that what they prefer to call “subjective well-being” comprises three parts: satisfaction, meant to capture how people judge their lives measured up against their aspirations; positive feelings like joy; and the absence of negative feelings like anger.” This is an important analysis of how we form the idea of how joyful we actually are. Something in life that one person might be ashamed of could improve the level of cheerfulness for another person. For example, the thought of getting a tattoo might cause one individual to feel guilt while another individual might feel pleasure at the same thought. Because there is no definitive formula that provides a calculated experience of happiness for everyone, it is interesting to question what actions or lack thereof in our lives cause us to be cheerful or to lose some of the happiness that we have already gained.
