First, people are not given choices about anything, even the ones that only affect their lives. When Jonas was speaking with The Giver after being given the memory of color, Jonas became angry that he was not given choices, but in the end they both agree that it is dangerous, because people, “‘might make the wrong decision’... ‘We don’t dare to let people make choices of their own’” (98). Then, Jonas was suddenly given more choices after becoming the Receiver of Memory like escape and the correct time to lie. He was able to feel more love. When given the choice of escape, Jonas discovered who he loved and what mattered to him most; Gabe. Jonas loved Gabe like nothing else. In the novel, Jonas is talking to The Giver about the inconveniences of unpredictable weather and hills. Jonas states that he wishes he, “had those things, still. Just now and then” (84). People never experience anything different or new in Jonas’s community. There is almost no excitement. There are no snowy days, or hot days. Instead, every day is the same. Everything is under control, but far from perfect. Colors are non existent and it is often not realized, but one often uses color to express themselves every day. Some colors make people feel differently than others. This adds to to emotions and how one may feel. In the community that Jonas lives in, people are unable to express their emotions, let alone feel these emotions. There aren’t any people with different colored hair, which symbolizes one’s uniqueness. When people are the same, there is no way to appreciate them for who they are.
