To begin, I will be talking about how in The Giver they don’t get …show more content…
to leave there dwelling after dark because if they do they will get in trouble.
Unlike in modern society where we get to leave our houses whenever we want to. In The Giver they call their houses “dwellings”. I think that one of the main differences between The Giver and modern societyś houses is that they get in trouble and are not aloud to leave there dwellings after dark. Where we by law can leave are houseś any time of the day or night. We have no rules against it. I personally think that it is a good thing we don't have a law against leaving are house after dark because many people have to go to work in the middle of the night and we have to head out of town early in the morning. We wouldn’t be aloud to do any of those things. I can also see why that would be a good law. It could be a good law because then we wouldn’t have any gang activity at night and we wouldn’t have as many
violations of property because there would be people watching to see what's happening outside. Also in The Givers society they wouldn’t really need outside after dark because they don’t have jobs that they have to go to at night and if they do then they are aloud to leave the dwelling because they have a special exception. The text I found supporting that in The Giver they aren’t allowed outside after dark is. “This was probably the most dangerous part, because it was a violation of a major rule for any citizen not on official business to leave a dwelling at night.” (The Giver, Lois Lowry, pg. 158) I think this supports my argument because it says it is dangerous because its a major law.
In addition, The Giver’s society is different because in The Giver they kill people if they are the lighter twin, they aren’t being successful as a baby, they are to old, if they ask for release, or if they violate three rules. This is different because we don’t kill people for any of those reasons. In fact it would be breaking the law for someone to kill another person for any of those reasons. I think it is unfair of them to kill those people because some of them haven't done anything wrong and even the ones who do aren’t doing stuff they deserve to be killed over. I mean I can see why they aren’t troubled by killing people, which is because they don’t know that it is wrong. Since they don’t have feelings so they don’t think it is wrong for them to kill all those people. I also think that they don’t really know that they are actually killing them and that it is wrong. In the text it says,“”He killed it! My father killed it! Jonas said to himself, stunned what he was realizing.” “Jonas stared at him. “Release is always like that? For people who break the rules three times? For the old? Do they kill the old, too?””( The Giver,Lois Lowry, pgs. 150, 153) I think that this supports my argument about The Giver being different than us because it talks about how they killed the twin and how Jonas didn’t even know that, that is what release is. I can see why Jonas was so shocked that they killed them because he didn’t know that is what they meant by release. When I think about it I would be shocked to if I just found out that my father killed babies and that everyone who is released is actually killed.
Also, in The Giver they live in dwellings with their parents until a certain age and then they move out and live in there own house. This is similar to our society because in our society we live in houses with our parents to until a certain point and we move out. I think that this is a good similarity because it is important to eventually live on your own and become an adult. This is why I think they did that in The Giver and in modern society becas=use it is a good skill to be able to live on your own. In the book (The Giver, Lois Lowry, Pg. 124) it says, “Joanas thought. “Oh,” he said slowly. ”When I finish my training and become a full adult, I’ll be given my own dwelling. And then when Lily does, a few years later, she’ll get her own dwelling, and maybe a spouse, and children i she applies for them, and then Mother and Father-” “That’s right.” “As long as they’re still working and contributing to the community, they’ll go live with the other Childless Adults. And they won’t be a part of my life anymore. “And after that, when the time comes, they’ll go to the House of the Old,” Jonas went on.” I think this supports my evidence because it shows how we both live in houses with our parents tell we are ready to move out.
To Conclude, I think that The Givers society and our society are different. There are many differences in the societies but there are some similarities. Thank you for listening to my opinion. Three things that I can compare to society know to the society in The Giver is number one we get to go outside of our house after dark with no punishment but not in The Giver, number two we don’t get killed for being to old, breaking a few rules, or for wanting out of the community, the last thing is something similar to in The Giver is that we live in a house with our parents until a certain age and in The Giver they do that to.
