The Giving Tree Sparknotes
I read The Giving Tree which is children’s picture book and written by Shel Silverstein. The reason I chose it is because my friend recommended it to me. I borrowed another book from UTSA library, but I was not interested in that book after I read it. When I consulted with my friend about book report, she recommended it and said to me “The Giving Tree will make you moved and think about the implication of that book.” That’s why I chose. I think a shape of love is written in it. The main characters are only two who are a boy and a female apple tree, and they can communicate verbally. Please don’t think that a tree can’t speak with her words because of a story. Anyway, I will introduce about its plot. A boy had been to the place a female apple tree was many times and they enjoyed playing with each other when he was a child. The more he grew up, the less frequently he went to her place. After he reached …show more content…
One idea is that it is written about selfless love which is similar to maternal love because a tree is female. I don’t know his responses since that book doesn’t mention about it at all, whereas he went to see her only if he had a favor to ask of her, so I guess he didn’t thank her warmly. Despite of it, she continued to respond to his request. I bet that is voluntary love and it is difficult for me to answer someone’s expectations to want nothing in return. For example, I think mothers can raise their kids since they can see smile of their kids. In this case, smile is reward. It’s tough to respond anytime, whereas I will be able to be dedicated selfless love. Other idea is that unconditional love influences people who has a favor badly because they can receive an inappropriate reward without effort. They may learn how to do it and behave dishonestly. That’s why we must judge whether we should meet someone’s expectations and expect nothing in return after considering of effect on

The book I chose this week is called "Tjatjakaymatchan (Coyote) A legend from Carmel Valley" by Alex O. Ramirez and is a Native American tale about why the coyote calls into the night. I would categorize this book as fiction because of the talking coyote and fox. I decided to read this book because of my Choctaw heritage and it reminded me that many first people languages and stories are vanishing into the time because they not written down most of the time. The most interesting piece of information that I found was about why this book was published and it was because the writer's friends encouraged him to write down his memories of his Elders so that they would not fade into time. I also thought his illustrations were interesting because unlike…

In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Gene Forrester and Phineas, also known as Finny, are best friends who have a very deep friendship. However, as the story progresses, Gene began to develop feelings of jealousy for Finny when he saw how perfect Finny’s character is. Finny has always been able to talk his way out of trouble and is naturally a good athlete who is earnest, confident, & pure. On the other hand, Gene cannot be pure like Finny and feels insecure. Seeing how good Finny is, caused Gene to become jealous, “I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything, I couldn’t help envying him…” (ch2.20) Soon, Gene thinks that a rivalry is happening between them. Because Gene envies Finny’s character, he thinks that Finny is also jealous of him for his good academic performance, “I felt better. Yes, I sensed it like the sweat of relief …We were even after all… The deadly rivalry was on both sides after all.”(ch4.34). By thinking there is a competition between them, Gene feels at ease, because none of them is better than the other. One night, Finny announced that Leper will jump off the tree, in order to become a full member of their secret society. Gene didn’t want to go because he feared his grade would slip if he didn’t study and also thinks that Leper wouldn’t dare to jump off the tree. After hearing from Gene that he wanted to study, Finny was surprise because he thought that Gene was naturally intelligent, who doesn’t need to review for a test. With sincerity, Finny lets Gene study, but Gene changed his mind and would come along with Finny. On the way to the tree,Gene realizes that a competition never happened and it was just Gene that was envious of Finny. Because Gene saw Finny's goodness and innocence, Gene realizes a rivalry with Finny will never occur. Gene began…

The tree is therefore personified as a woman in the story as she exhibits characteristics of the "maternal instinct" and though she did not give birth to the boy she takes him in as if she had.

One of the main messages portrayed in the story is that unselfish everlasting love ultimately has the greatest effect on the lover not the one being loved. The mother figure/tree was deeply wounded in the long run as every time the boy came for something more, she would have to sacrifice a part of her body to make him happy or satisfy him. Psychologist Barbara Frederickson offers a psychosocial theory on the concept of everlasting love. She describes that it does not exist and ultimately any connects a human being engages in is true love if those engaging in the scene are both portraying strong positive emotions. Taking this theory as fact, it leads to a counterargument on whether or not the tree truly loved the boy or felt obligated to show feelings towards him. Either way, she along the journey of her life loved more than the boy but ultimately ended up sacrificing everything for him, once again portraying that maternal instinct.

I chose the book Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder and illustrated by Garth Williams. This book was first published in 1932. I chose this book at random from my grandmother’s house over Thanksgiving. I knew that she had all of the books and my sister had used my grandmother’s collection to read them all when she was younger. I just chose the first book that I saw and I really lucked out because it looked interesting. I felt that I could not go wrong with any of the books because they are widely praised for being great reads. This was the first time that I was reading a book from the collection. I had been interested in other titles when I was younger so I never became interested in these books.…

Unlike the town, the Forest contains no trace of malice. When Pearl tells her mother, “The sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something in your bosom”, she explains that nature responds to morality (165). The forest can discern between innocence and sin. It is untamed and wild. When rain comes, the water “transmutes the yellow fallen leaves to gold”, signifying the raw beauty that dwells in the forest (183). The rose bush beside the jail resembles good among…

On my 12th birthday I was given one of my favorite books, the original Grimm's Fairy Tales, as a present from my aunt. I have been a big reader as long as I can remember so I was used to getting books as presents. This book was special. It was the first leather bound book I had ever owned, with its gorgeous blue cover and beautiful gold filigree. It felt special before I even opened the cover. Once I dug in and started to read the stories it opened up a whole new world to me. Receiving the original Grimm's Fairy Tales was a significant literacy experience for me because it inspired me to learn about history, to be more creative, and instilled a love of old stories and books.…

The book Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde made the biggest impact on me. This book was written in the late 1800's and the theme still has deep meaning today. In my opinion, the theme of the story is based on the idea that we all have a good side and an evil side. I believe that there are life lessons to this idea. I also enjoyed the theme because I could relate to it in some ways.…

When I was a child my mom would be the one to read to me, and it would mostly be before I went to bed. There were a few other times when she would read to me, like Christmas Eve night she would read me a Christmas book. The two main books I remember her reading to me were “The giving Tree” and “Love You Forever”. In the past, when I had to read, sometimes I would skim the book just to find the answers quick and easy. Other times I would read the selection, sometimes because I couldn’t find the answer from skimming. I was never taught any specific strategies for when I read.…

My grandmother didn’t believe in wasting money on toys, she believed in all the entertainment a book had to offer. So she brought me to a book store that was especially for children and told me to pick any book that I wanted. Oh My God was it the hardest thing in the world when there were thousands and thousands of books. Walking through several books this red book, with a yellow title and a bear with green overalls missing a button caught my attention. I know they say don’t judge a book by its cover but something just drew my young mind to this book. After Grandmother buying it she started to read it to me which I made her more than three times before I went to sleep. I think reading is something you learn to love or hate at a young…
