The Giving Tree Theme
Have you ever loved someone so much that you will try to give them anything? The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein is a short story about a boy who is never satisfied. He keeps asking his friend, who is a tree, for a house, apples, and a boat. Throughout the story, the reader begins to understand that the author is trying to convey that always have a positive attitude and give to loved ones. There is evidence to support this theme. For example, the boy wanted money so the tree told the boy to pick her apples and sell them. Also, the boy then wanted a boat so he cut down the tree’s trunk but that didn’t stop the tree from being happy. In conclusion, the above evidence shows that always be cheerful and generous by giving.

Shel Silverstein wrote a children’s book that can be perceived through multiple critical lenses, from historical to feminist to psychological. In the Giving Tree he uses personification, metaphor, and allusions to depict the psychological impact of growing up with someone who was different than him but whom he shared a special bond with.

Silverstein begins by using personification to describe the tree's constant giving and dedication. Throughout the life of the tree, she ultimately sacrifices and gives everything she has to the boy symbolizing both compassion and love. She continues this pattern throughout her entire life and his entire life which is why Silverstein may have portrayed her as a woman. Throughout history women have been…

    The Gift By Li-Young Lee

Li-Young Lee’s, “The Gift” unquestionably communicates several ideas, some rather direct, and others buried within the rhetoric and composition of the poem. Although the meaning (of the poem) may be left to interpretation, one of the most prominent concepts of the story, in my belief, is the gift of love and consequent tradition of offering it to loved ones. In the beginning of the poem, the narrator describes his father comforting him in the painful situation of removing a metal splinter from his hand: “My father recited a story in a low voice. I watched his lovely face and not the blade.” The father’s calm and affectionate demeanor can be further attested to in the second stanza, “...I recall his hands, two measures of tenderness, he laid…

I think the best scene that illustrates the journey to a new self is when the ghost of Christmas future puts Scrooge in a grave, and makes him have to promise that he will change. First the spirit shows Scrooge the bed where he is laying at the moment. “Tell me what man that was, with the covered face, whom we saw lying dead?” Then the spirit takes Scrooge to his own grave where it starts sinking and Scrooge is falling inside. In the grave, Scrooge makes a promise. “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” “I will not shut out the lessons that they teach.”…

Generosity is the virtue of not being tied down by concerns of one’s possessions and giving away those possessions without expecting anything in return. The stories, “Day 10, Story 3” and “Day 10, Story 4” from The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio are splendid examples of generosity that express the values and different aspects of generosity. Both Nathan from “Day 10, Story 3” and Gentile from “Day 10, Story 4” are generous, however Nathan’s the actions that Nathan takes make Nathan more generous. Nathan’s and Gentile’s generosity is illustrated through the intentions associated with their actions, the manner by which they express their generosity, and the results that they obtain because of their generosity.…

While the purpose of ‘The simple gift’ is to entertain and demonstrate the importance of acceptance in belonging. The perseverance showed by Steve Jobs allowed him to develop two new companies NeXT and Pixar and made his way back into Apple. By being a non conformist he stresses the importance of doing what one loves to do. “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking” His urgent tone in this statement stresses the importance of his point and motivates the graduates to form their own connections in life. However Billy received help from the connection he had formed with Old Bill. “I held the key in my hands. I knew better than to ask him inside.” The imagery of Billy holding the key in both his hands expands on its value and importance. Old Bill gave Billy his house and took guardianship over him to protect his sense of belonging because of the acceptance Billy showed to him “I sat beside the old hobo and handed them across” others would have ignored old bill but billy may have seen him on his level a person with a reason behind his homelessness” the imagery of a teenager helping a homeless person and the sentimental valve the simple gift of a carton of cigarettes could not be measured as it was the first…

The poem “The Workbox” written in 1914 by Thomas Hardy explores this topic. Throughout the poem the theme is shown to be that a kind gesture and concerned words can be a false veneer that is meant to thinly veil anger, cruelty, and dominance.…
