The Godfather: I Believe In America
The first sentence in the opening scene of The Godfather is, "I believe in America." The father further elaborates on the prominent American value of freedom by explaining his anger towards his daughter's offenders and their suspended sentence and freedom from their crime. Today I read two articles that have impacted my thought of the millennials era, those two articles are The Outsiders: How Can Millennials Change Washington If They Hate It? by Ron Fournier and Millennials: The Greatest Generation or the Most Narcissistic? by Jean Twenge. In the first article they really explained that this generation, the people of today are the ones that they younger people are more service oriented than anyone ever was. This is a great thing, but whats the link? Nothing actually. These young adults are going out and helping their community just because they want to help out not because they want a job in the government or politics. In fact they don't see politics or the government actually helping their community. They are…

Michael is the son of Vito Corleone, Don of the Corleone Crime Family1. The story of The Godfather is the story of both Vito and Michael. Vito passes away and leaves his throne to Michael, who steps out of a seemingly innocent world ordinary American life to receive his father's crown and to assume control of the Corleone Family. As my thesis focuses on Michael, I will recount the events of The Godfather and then discuss Michael's role in the film. Thus, I will present a chronology of The Godfather which covers the events from the title scene until the final credits. After this chronology, I will explain how the film portrays Michael Corleone and his life. In my thesis, I claim that Michael changes from the beginning of the film to the end. Thus, I will examine the opening wedding scene as well as the final scene in which Michael is christened, Don Corleone. In addition, I will study two intermediate scenes, one in which Michael crosses the line and enters the Family, and another which is the baptism sequence, the apotheosis of Coppola's filmic depiction of Michael Corleone's life. The juxtaposition of these four scenes will show the changes in Michael's life as well as the filmic devices which Coppola employs to depict the subtleties of this transformation.…

In the eyes of Suzanne Wong, Vito Corleone is a man who deserves to be admired. He is a man who does well and expects nothing less in return. In Wong’s essay, she constantly brings up the deeds he does for everyone. Her reasons about why Don Vito Corleone is such a great role model were very well explained and detailed. She builds up Vito’s character so others can view him as a god like figure, hence why his nickname is The Godfather. I do agree with her on some topics, but at the same time I disagree. I agree with Wong when she says friendships are important, and Vito really showed how important it was. In addition, I agree with her argument about traditional values. What I don’t necessarily agree with is what she said about success and how the Don achieved it by himself. So therefore I mainly agree with Wong but at the same time I disagree just a little. I agree with Corleone being a good role model because he values friendship and traditional values but I don’t agree that he is because his success all resulted from violence.…

Racism has been around since the beginning of time. Basically if you had a skin tone darker than the shade of white, you were inferior. Times have now changed, but there are remnants of this subject everywhere, even in film. The movie Birth of a Nation is considered one of the greatest films of all time, even with these themes. AMC’s Filmsite even has it listed within the 100 Greatest Films of All Time. Another movie with the some of the same themes is Blazing Saddles. Blazing Saddles does not have the same stature as Birth of a Nation, but it does deserve to be higher in the canon. I do believe that Blazing Saddles does not have the same stature because it is a comedy with crude humor and because it has a black sheriff as the protagonist.…

Slide 9: The ring- As a symbol of respect in the mafia, a person kisses the hand of the Godfather, in this case Don Vito. This is interesting because in the Catholic religion, a person kisses the ring of the Pope when they him. These connect because the official religion of Italy has been Roman Catholic and that is also the location where the Italian mafia originated, and where Don Vito was born. Through the slow paced editing and the actions of the Godfather, he is introduced as a powerful, and mysterious character that demands…
