The Gotra System
Introduction:
The term ‘Gotra’ has been procured from Rigveda which means ‘Group or Community’. The term also adverts to ‘Family’ and ‘Lineage Kin’. In Scientific terms, Gotra procures the origin of a community having similar features and behaviours. In Sanskrit ‘Go’ means Cow and ‘Gotra’ means Cow Pen where as in Hindu Society the term ‘Gotra’ symbolises clan and it broadly implies the descendants in a ceaseless male line from a common male ancestor. Panini defines ‘Gotra’ for grammatical purposes as ‘Apatyam Pautraprabhrti Gotram’ which means the word Gotra denotes the progeny (of a sage) beginning with a son’s son. The Gotra system augmented for catering the needs of increasing population by accumulating an additional number of racial and

As per the scientific lucidity, a human has 23 pairs or 46 chromosomes out of which only one pair determines whether a girl or boy will be born and it is also known as sex chromosome. Intrinsically, the chromosome of a male is XY and that of a girl is XX. X has female attributes while Y has male attributes. During initial embryonic stage, if an embryo has XY chromosome the female attributes are likely to suppress by the genes in the Y chromosomes and eventually the a male child is born and vice versa when a female child is born. Henceforth it can be undoubtedly said that the gotra of any male or female are coming from their fathers. And that is why marriages between same gotra are prohibited. Marriage under such situation would be taken into account as incest or which is extremely looked down upon by the society with an eye of hatred. Scientific studies highly support this fact as biologically Y chromosome is similar in all males among same gotra and correspondingly for X chromosome in females and therefore accordingly, off springs from a couple of same gotra possess a high chance of diseases in future the physical disability increases …show more content…
The size of Y chromosome in a human body carries a special feature of male which is about one third of the size of Y chromosomes. Scientific facts have shown that the size of Y chromosomes are deliberately curtailing in human and in future this phenomena is likely to give rise to a calamitous scenario of extremely less number of males. Scientists have blamed the marriage within same gotra or family as a pivot factor in genetic defects which has been passing on from generations and DNA’s are repeatedly getting distorted. Therefore, a preventive measure that all people in cities and towns can take is by evaluating the blood groups and DNA profile to stop the passage of dangerous recessive genes in next generations. According to scientists, so far more than 1000 gene-specific diseases have been specified due to marriages within the same gotra. Disorders such as “Cystic Fibrosis”, “Sickle- cell Anaemia”, “Galactosemia”, “Thalasemia”, “Autism”, “Juvenile muscular dystrophy” and “Growth Hormone Deficiency” may occur due to same gotra

First, families units are created much differently than in my society. In The Giver, if a male/female wants to get married, they fill out an application stating their likes, dislikes, etc. Then, if the male/female is matched with an opposite gender, they are now considered married, without any knowledge of who their new spouse is. Women do not get pregnant; there are Birthmothers that have babies. If the married couple wants a child, they must fill a form which can be accepted or denied. If it is accepted, they take a child from the birthmother, and that is their new child. A family can only have two children, a boy and a girl.…

How much of genetic information can the parents or relatives access raises a concern that it might result in an excessive use of reprogenetics. Furthermore, if scientists allow DNA screening for parents to avoid passing genetic diseases to their children, that might lead to more designer babies. Human genetic engineering is new and current field that has its pros and cons. Therefore, we should be more concerned about setting up the limits of how much access the public and scientists can have on genetic information, and taking in consideration the ethical issues behind…

Genetic conditions affect a significant portion of the general population, although any one condition is relatively rare. People with a genetic condition may require health and social services from a number of professionals, depending on the types of problems caused by the condition. While most of those providing care may focus on a system or type of problem, the genetics nurse is able to address the impact of the condition as a whole and the issues that arise from the potentially inherited nature of the condition(ANA, 2004). Furthermore, the genetics nurse offers holistic family care that addresses the needs of the affected individuals, family members at risk for…

Genetics play a vital role in our development and that of our children. Our genetic make-up, or traits, directly affects our children’s development, from the moment of conception and the beginnings of a new person, throughout his or her life. The child’s developmental fate is all in the deoxyribonucleic acid, (DNA). Deoxyribonucleic acid, is fashioned in the shape of a double helix; a twisted ladder of genetic code, which along with various proteins, which are essential to aid the DNA in proper cell division, are found in chromosomes. These are the microscopic structures that contain all an individual’s genetic information which are found in every cell of the human body except red blood cells, which have no nuclei (TGC, 2013). Half our chromosomes (23) come from our father, and the other half from our mother, for a total of 46. Together, this set of 23 pairs of chromosomes is responsible for giving us our hair color, eye color, height, the shape of our earlobes, our facial features, our shape, and the color of our skin; our genotype, or inherited traits from both parents’ genes (Mossler, 2011). Child development is dependent on genetics and the compatibility and health of the combined parental sets of chromosomes (GSLC, n.d).…

The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology describes that Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) is the important structure of an organism that created into DNA, is a sum of amino acids that code for important proteins, and that is why the genes are the code that selects the amino acids sequences that builds up the essential proteins in the body. During sexual reproduction these genes found on coiled bands of DNA that are passed down randomly the mother and father. This genetic evidence differs not only in the mixture and comparison of a gene, known as an allele, but also it is found on the mixture of sex chromosomes creating either male or female species. Sex-linked genes differ based on the chromosomes given: males given an X Y chromosome while a female given an X chromosome from the mother and the other XX chromosome. A gene can be sex-linked if two X chromosomes in a female or a Y chromosome in a male is present. Females obtain two copies of the X-linked gene thus a female body can have a greater amount of gene dosage and protein. In series for sex-linked inheritance to happen it must be determined that the gene is associated to the presence of an X or Y chromosome. If this does not happen then the gene is shared by both males and female and it is considered to be an autosomal gene. In a rearrangement of genetic material, an autosomal gene will assort based on the alleles existing and are usually hypothesized to be unlinked gene with a ratio of…

In Sanskrit ‘Go’ means Cow and Gotra means ‘cow-pen’. Cow was supposed to be the valuable commodity and the family were recognised by the cow-pens and later the term was linked with the family group and its lineage. In the ancient world as well as the modern society, people tend to form cohesive groups based on Language, Castes, Culture, Gotras etc. In Hindu society, the term Gotra means clan and it broadly signifies the descendants in an unbroken male line from a common male ancestor. Panini defines Gotra for grammatical purposes as ‘Apatyam Pautraprabhrti Gotram’, which means “the word Gotra denotes the progeny (of a sage) beginning with the son’s son.” The existence of Gotra system in the Indian society seems to be a matter…
