The United States Government has enacted many polices to help recognize the major causes of air pollution today and what people can do to help clean the air. People finally have the ability to understand more reasonable responses to environmental contaminants and they provide a window into the impacts that the human race is having on the earth. One of the main causes of air pollution is manufacturing due to particular matter and chemicals that are released into the atmosphere. Since 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency has protected public health by setting and enforcing standards to protect the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink. There are many other government organizations that help explain the importance of needing clean air and how people can begin to stop polluting the atmosphere. Air pollution is one of the most important environmental health threats of our time. It is a huge leading cause of death in the United States which includes heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic lower respiratory diseases. Air pollution and other air toxins damage our airways, lungs, heart, and circulatory systems. Exposure to these pollutants increase ones chance of having to go to the hospital and emergency room visits, time lost from school and work, and premature deaths due to disease. Every year, the health of countless people is ruined or endangered by air pollution. Many different chemicals in the air affect the human body in negative ways. Just how sick people will get depends on what chemicals they are exposed to, in what intentions, and for how long. Studies have estimated that the number of people killed annually in the US alone could be over 50,000. Older people are highly vulnerable to diseases induced by air pollution. Those with heart or lung disorders are under additional risk. Children and infants are also at serious risk. Congress established
