The Grapes: A Short Story
I really thought I was gonna get the lady for her purse but I failed. I was so scared I didn’t know what was gonna happen to me. Was she gonna hurt me? Put me in jail? Instead, she kicked me right in my sitter of my blue jeans. Then she picked me up by my shirt a shook me till I couldn’t take it anymore. At that point in time, I regretted what I did and shouldn’t have taken the situation that far. But what scared me the most was when the women said, “ Pick up my pocketbook, boy, and give it here.” She didn’t release me but she bent down enough to allow me to pick up the purse. Then she started to drag me up the street. I’m only a frail little boy but she didn’t care not one bit. At last, we made it to her home but she still had a very tight grip on me. …show more content…
She asked me what my name was and I replied,” Roger”. Then she told me to go wash my face. She left the door right open I thought I could make a run for it, but I didn’t want to put myself in any more danger. The lady got up and left the room only looking at her purse. She said her name was Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. I was amazed by how long her name was but I had no time to think about that. I took care to sit on the other side of the room so she wouldn’t suspect anything. Then she heated some lima beans and ham she had in her icebox. I had to admit I was starving. She also made some cocoa. As we ate dinner she said,” Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoe.” Then she led me down the hall and I didn’t know what to say. As I walked out the door she told me goodnight and to be safe, but I didn’t say anything back. No words can explain how grateful I am for her to do the things for me. Then she shut the door. I was relieved when I got home. Man… What a

Charles Chesnut's work, "The Goophered Grapevine" deeply resonates with me, not only for its literary values, but also because it shows deep insight into the complexities of race, identity, and power dynamics in South America. Chesnut's own life experience as a mixed-race man navigating the harsh terrain of racism and discrimination undoubtedly informed his description of these subjects. As a reader, I was impressed by Chesnut's ability to create thought-provoking stories by combining elements of folklore and realism. Chesnut skillfully explores African-American culture and the ways it was used as a means of resistance and survival in the face of oppression through Uncle Julius's characteristics. Chesnut's exploration of the relationship between…

In chapter thirty of The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck highlights the most destitute moment of the Joad family during their exodus to California and the transformation of many characters. Steinbeck opens the chapter by describing the flood is taking over the boxcar. Pa urges other men to build an embankment because Rose of Sharon begins to experience labor. While the men work on building the embankment, the cotton tree is uprooted, cascades into the embankment and destroys it. Steinbeck continues to show the Joads’ struggle to overcome the hardships as Pa goes back into the box car, and Mrs. Wainwright informs him that Rose Sharon has delivered a stillborn child. The Joads send Uncle John to bury the child. Because the water level keeps increasing,…

I’d tumbled off the freight in the jungle by Deptford and found a fire and seven fellows around it, and they had stew – somebody’d got a rabbit and it was in a pail over the fire with some carrots. Ever eat that? It’s awful, but I wanted some, and after a lot of nastiness they said I could have some after they’d had what they wanted of me. My manhood just couldn’t stand it, and I left them. They laughed at me and said I’d be back when I got good and hungry. Then I met this woman, wandering by herself. I knew she was a town woman. Women tramps are very rare; too much sense, I guess. She was clean and looked like an angel to me, but I threatened her and asked her for money. She hadn’t any; then I grabbed her. She wasn’t much afraid and asked what I wanted. I told her in tramp’s language, and I could see she didn’t understand, but when I started to push her down and grab at her clothes she said, ‘Why are you so rough?’ and then I started to cry. She held my head to her breast and talked nicely to me, and I cried worse, but the strange thing is I still wanted her. As if only that would put me right, you see? That’s what I said to her. And do you know what she said? She said ‘You may if you promise not to be rough.’ So I did, and that was when you people came hunting her. When I look back now, it’s a wonder that it wasn’t all over with me that moment. But it wasn’t. No, it was glory come into my life. It was as if I had gone right into Hell…

I was closing in behind her as she reached the crosswalk. She started to cross, of course I followed. After we crossed the street, she walked for awhile, then she sat down on a communal bench. “May I sit here?” I asked. “Of course,” she replied. A minute or two later, she asked “You look familiar, do I know you?” I stated who I was. Everything clicked after that. We started talking about the old days when nothing really matters. I lost track of time, we sat there for what seemed like minutes. Only to find out it had been a couple hours. We exchanged phone numbers, I told her to keep in touch. We went our separate ways, I called a cab and went back to my…

I spent a great amount of time trying to decipher how to get the car to start. Meanwhile, Joe just sat there by the side of the road eating crackers. “We’d be on our way now if you would just call a tow truck!!” he yelled. I paid him no mind, that’s all he ever does anyway, talk. Yet, he was right. I couldn’t afford a tow truck, I was still waiting on my next paycheck, since the last one finished the next day after I cashed it. I leaned against the trunk of my car, I looked down at my shoes they were…

As I sat there, playing, the door suddenly banged open. My mom stood there anxiously with fear in her chocolaty eyes. I knew something tragic had occurred for she never came home early. She grabbed my forearms and pulled me up with a jolt and snatched a plastic bag from the corner and stuffed what little clothes and toys I had in it. My own brown eyes were filled with tears, but I didn’t let them fall. She dragged me along as she moved and on her way out, she shut the door with a thunderous bang. Who would have thought that that was the last day I would ever see that little one room garage house again.…
