It seems that he feels that he is offering her a better place than society. That the real world is filled with horrible things and she isn’t grateful for the oasis that he gives her. We know that Old Nick is an insensitive psychopath. He has kept her as a pet for seven years in his garden shed. It was based off this quote from the book that I theorized what Old Nick’s motive could be for keeping her for so long. Since many kidnapping and rape stories end with murder I’d pondered why he’d kept her alive for so long.; in the cases that don’t it’s usually because the psychopath has had a past of abuse and thus has developed an inability to form relationships. Considering the book or movie never tells us any background information on Old Nick this will all only remain a theory. Although I also based my theory off the fact that one of Emma Donoghues’ literary inspirations for writing the book was The Collector by John Fowles. The first part of this book is told from the perspective of socially impaired individual named, Clegg. He works in a hotel and collects butterflies as a hobby, he later falls in love with this girl Miranda Grey, but isn’t capable of making a connection with.
