Motif
Motifs are recurring symbols that add to themes in a piece of literature. Some motifs in “The Great Gatsby,” include Gatsby’s yellow car, the billboard with the eyes, and Gatsby’s phrase “old sport.” Yellow is known as “fake gold.” Many objects are yellow in “The Great Gatsby.” This represents Gatsby’s desire to be rich and to attract Daisy. When Gatsby takes Nick to lunch, he speeds throughout New York. When a cop tries to pull Gatsby over, Gatsby shows him a card with his name on it, and the cop lets him go on. He knows of Myrtle’s and Tom’s affair. He sees when Daisy kills Myrtle by running her over without even stopping. It also represents how the American dream is dead. Even though some can achieve the dream, most are stuck as poor and will turn to ashes
