The Great Man Theory is the idea in which history explains the impact made by the “great people”, highly influential people, of the past. These people possessed a great deal of charisma, intelligence, and wisdom which helped them gain power and left a lasting impression in history. However, there are two different types of people that can be considered great. One of them is an eventful man, one who requires a simple command to make a decisive chose. Another is the event–making man, one who finds a divide in history and frees the path, while displaying exceptional qualities of leadership. Just as the greatest known physician of his time, Hippocrates. From changing the perspective of how medicine is viewed in the eyes …show more content…
Being an event-making man saw that these illnesses needed to be cured and treated, however, since there was no one to who could give a correct assumption to why these diseases occurred and how they could be cured, Hippocrates then decided he’d come up with methods and practices to help improve the path of medicine. One of the ideas, Hippocrates contributed is to the field of spinal surgery. “Hippocrates describes methods for the management of spinal diseases. He deals mostly with the correction of curvatures of the spine and spinal injuries” (Chang, Lad & Lad, 2007), however, at the time of Hippocrates dissections or surgeries were not considered an ethical practice. So, Hippocrates did not dissect or gave drugs to patients, this he was completely against, but he was the creator of the philosophy behind spinal surgery. However, he did make different types of machineries to support patients with spinal deformities; he developed the Hippocratic table (Chang, Lad & Lad, 2007). Also, Hippocrates in his time developed many types of machinery with the materials he had been provided at the time, “Hippocrates had developed special machineries, such as the Hippocratic bench, a bed to pull the body of the patient and diffuse pressure” (GNTO, "Hippocrates, the Physician”). The legacy of many contributions that Hippocrates left behind was passed down to future generations. Hippocrates had developed a sacred oath used by physicians to treat a patient to the best of one’s capability and teach future physicians the secrets of medicine, “the idea of medicine as a moral community can be linked back to Hippocrates” ("Ethical Issues in Health Care, 2014) Hippocrates belief of ethicality makes him a great man because he believed unethical practices were an inhumane way of treating patients and that was something that Hippocrates, himself did not want and nor did he want others to be doing such incorrect things. Much later on in history, Hippocrates methods were utilized by the Middle East and Europeans and physicians throughout the 17th century. “The Greek physician Hippocrates of Cos (c. 460 - c. 370 BCE), the "father of medicine", laid the foundation for a rational approach to medicine” (Crabben, 2011), Hippocrates’s life had been a way that paved a continuing foundation of inspiration for physicians and healers through the ages. With all of these rich medical and ethical contributions, Hippocrates was given the title of “Father of Medicine.” “Hippocrates, known as the "Father of Medicine," was a central figure in the medical and philosophical world of Greek antiquity” (Thomson,2005), Hippocrates, the event-making man, foresaw a problem or thought differently of
