The Greatest Barriers To Communication In Social Care
As Social Care Practitioners, good communication is of vital importance. Social Care Practitioners on an everyday basis have clients/service users that they need to communicate with. However, in some cases barriers to communication may cause this communication to become hindered. One of the greatest barriers to overcome is the persons lack of interest in your message or if they don’t receive your message clear and concisely. Barriers stop us from communicating effectively. Barriers to communication can occur if there are language problems or if the person doesn’t understand what you are saying to them, or in the case of Social Care if the person has a mild, moderate or severe disability and may be non-verbal.
Social care worker’s job involves engaging with clients and those people involved in their care, for example family members or those involved in the persons’ person centred plan. To provide the most effective services and/or counselling, a social care

A social care worker must know how to ask the right questions and phrase them in the best way and to get the necessary information or to be able to modify the language of the questions to help a client understand what was being asked, for example, in a disability setting. Social care workers may also benefit from knowing how to use alternate procedures for getting information from those not willing to part with the information. A social care worker’s nonverbal behaviours can go a long way when it comes to communicating effectively. Social care workers should make eye-to-eye contact when speaking with clients and those involved with their care. Giving a smile can signal warmth and make a social worker seem more approachable, facial expressions such as yawning and/or eye rolling can be seen as a lack of interest on the clients
