The first chapter in Myne Owne Ground describes the life of Anthony Johnson, who was sent to the Virginia colony around 1621 from Angola to serve as an indentured servant to Edward Bennett on the Bennett Plantation. It’s strange to call him an indentured servant, however there was no actual terminology to describe what a slave is until later in the court case between Anthony Johnson and Robert Parker over rights to a freed African slave whose name was John Casor. Mary, his later wife, arrived to the plantation year after the Indians attacked the Bennett plantation leaving only 12 alive, Anthony who was one. Anthony was fortunate to be with Mary and have kids because in this newfound colony, women were scarce. Johnson’s status of becoming free was clear but how and who freed him…

After reading Eboo Patel’s Sacred Ground, I have attained a better understanding that the concept of diversity in itself is not enough if we are to be truly free from religious oppression. Patel discusses pluralism along with diversity as being necessary to understand and promote religious freedoms universally. In today’s world it is safe to say that overall, most progressive societies have embraced diversity to some extent, but these same societies struggle with the concept of pluralism. To be diverse and tolerant is no longer enough to decrease religious tensions worldwide, having a true knowledge and respect for other religions is really the only way for societies to engage with each other in a way that allows for our differences to be acknowledged…

The 17th century was an important time period as the New World continued to develop into a society run by English settlers. The book, Myne Owne Ground, by Timothy Breen, focuses on the colonial history of the 1600’s. However, what is discussed in the book does not detail what was accomplished in this time period. Rather, Breen pinpoints the classes of people such as slaves, indentured servants, and free blacks; how they came to become part of those groups and when racism first started. For decades, not all blacks were slaves and servants. Some blacks were free men in the New World. That would only become a short memory, though, as the idea of being non-white turned into the biggest embarrassment in American history; slavery.…

Traditionally, young women in Turkey, as in some other cultures, are expected to avoid sexual relations prior to marriage, although the same rule does not apply to men. The morning after the wedding, the bride’s virginity is revealed by displaying the sheet that was spread on the couple’s wedding bed with the telltale hymeneal blood stain. An American human rights group condemned this practice, as well as reports of forced virginity tests on hospital patients, students and applicants for government jobs. Here is the question: Is the human rights group being ethnocentric in judging Turkish customs by American cultural norms, or is it correctly identifying abuses of women that must be corrected? And does it help if we further…

Conrad jumps swiftly into the drivers side of the rusted, orange-tinted car and sinks into the ripped up cloth seats. Jeannine scoots over as she rubs her old, washed out blue jeans against the seat and pulls her feet in, as they clonk onto the floor, small groups of dust rise like a puff from a cigarette. As Conrad turns the keys they rattle softly and the engine roars like an angry lion. As they slam their doors shut, there is a loud boom as the radio blares through the speakers, which causes Conrad and Jeannine to jump back in their seats. They strap in their seatbelts and listen for the familiar click, then slump back into the seats, as the thin strands of air slip through the small tears in the seats from the pressure.…
