Theme 1 which is Interaction Between Humans and the Environment applies in the movie. Theme 1 means the development of demography, disease, migration, patterns of settlement, technology etc. In the movie, the Tutsi are getting revenge on the Hutus because of years of humiliation and being treated like slaves. Throughout the movie, the Hutus migrate from their homes and then some to The Milles Collines to be hidden from the Tutsi rebels. Others tried going to other countries to be safe but many were killed by the Tutsis. Also, one example of disease could be the dead bodies in the water. This contaminates the water, which could lead to fertilization of the ground. Theme 2 is Development and Interaction of Cultures. Theme 2 means the development of religions, belief systems and arts. In the movie, there is a shift of beliefs. At the beginning, the Hutu Power Radio was calling the Tutsis “cockroaches”. But once the revolt was initiated by the Tutsis rebels, they were the ones calling the Hutus “cockroaches” and murdering any Hutus they found. Theme 3 is State-Building, Expansion and Conflict. This theme means the development of political structure, empires, nations, revolts and revolutions. In the movie, the United Nations tried helping the Rwandan people out and tried improving the economic and political structure. The conflict was one, the UN didn’t really care about
