He introduces the idea that with the retirement of the majority of seasoned educators we now have the rare chance to reform our public education system. Specifically, he calls for the improvements of wages, long hours, support, respect and an end to the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding teachers within our society. In addition,
Eggers provides statistics comparing the treatment of teachers in the United States and the three countries that maintain the best performances on standardized tests: Finland, Singapore and Korea. This comparison highlighted a distinct correlation between the approach these three countries take in treating teachers nationwide. Ultimately, trust in our educators is a key issue and our nation and its leaders must view teachers as the solution rather than the problem.

The Washington State constitution dictates “It is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders, without distinction or preference on account of race, color, caste or sex.” All children have the right to an education, however unlike other states, within the Washington State constitution it is made a “paramount duty”. In 1976, following a failure to pass a levy by Seattle School District, Seattle School District argued that this wasn’t the case. The Doran decision in the late 70’s found that Washington State was violating its constitutional law in not providing adequate funds to public education. The McCleary case took it further and argued that Washington State needs to do more than cover a percentage within a school budget but fully fund public education and real changes need to be made. These changes were the laws ESHB 2261 and SHB 2776 which required such things as lower class sizes, fully funded kindergarten and highly capable programs, increased credits for high school, increased instructional hours and new funding levels to be established by the 2018 school year. As of December 2012 the findings were that the state was not making adequate progress towards making the 2018 deadline and that inequities in funding still existed. This paper will examine the funding inequities in Washington State public education and identify both the impact and some possible alternative or solutions. The three main reasons contributing to funding inequities that will be examined are; an overreliance on local funding, grandfathering of levy lids, and discrepancy in teacher salary dependent on school district.…

Teacher need to be able to relate and care for the children in order to be successful. A group of experts from University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education explains, “of all the teacher elements analyzed by the Virginia group, feedback—a direct, personal response by a teacher to a specific statement by a student—seems to be most closely linked to academic success.” (Gladwell). Being a good teacher has very little to do with the teachers academic abilities but relies on his or her ability to relate and communicate to her students. The gap between good and bad teachers is huge. Eric Hanushek, an economist at Stanford, estimates that “the students of a very bad teacher will learn, on average, half a year’s worth of material in one school year. The students in the class of a very good teacher will learn a year and a half’s worth of material” (Gladwell). This explains that giving jobs to academically skilled applicants should highly evaluated and elaborated to make sure the right educators are chosen. This leads to another part in Gladwell's essay about the hiring of teachers. Coming from the idea of Ed Deutschlander, it is suggested that “teaching should be open to anyone with a pulse and a college degree—and teachers should be judged after they have started their jobs, not before” (Gladwell). Many skills need to be tested in the real situation, and this is a great solution to finding the applicant's best fit for a career in teaching. Teaching on of may situations that the process of hiring is highly difficult and…

In the article called “A New Deal for Teachers,” Matthew Miller discusses a very serious problem in the education system: incompetent teachers are causing a really big concern on schools. New teachers are not trained in the proper way to instruct students. Their “poor quality standard such as their undeveloped skills affects the learning of students, but that is not the great issue that bothers other colleagues. Most of those teachers cannot be fired. Rotating them from school to school is the only solution that the Federation of Teachers could set to not aggravate schools and jeopardize students’ learning skills, which are mostly low income schools. Matthew Miller also presents a plan of resolution to this issue: suit to work professionally…

We are writing to you to advocate for the continuance of Miss. Degenhardt’s (Profe) teaching career at Darien High School. We write with the purpose to make you aware of Profe’s profound impact on the community and the growth of her students both in the context of academics and ethics; her notable qualities and dedication to her profession are of a role model. While Profe’s style of teaching is unorthodox at some points, this unorthodoxy provides students with a diverse and meaningful education in an otherwise, orthodox day. A quality that is central to Profe’s teaching and persona is her receptiveness to student opinion, which in our opinion should be a constant in all student-teacher relationships. For example, if a student feels that a decision in terms of either a grade or punishment she made was unjust, Profe is fully open to a one-on-one discussion, either during a mutual free or before or after school. Profe’s actions reject the notion of “my way or the highway” and epitomize the characteristic of open-mindedness: a quality that is crucial in our increasingly globally connected society. For a personal anecdote, during a student’s sophomore year he felt that he did not deserve grade X; therefore, he approached Profe and asked to meet with her before school. The student and Profe discussed the grade and while the grade remained unchanged, he had a better understanding as to why he received grade X and how he can avoid receiving grade X in the future. In another, unrelated circumstance, Profe organizes an annual in-class food drive to afford families in the Bronx a decent Thanksgiving meal, which reveals her altruism and devotion to paying it forward. Moments such as these are what define Profe’s impact and overall career to DHS and academia. As a community, we are here to support a teacher who has supported us. Thank you in advance for your time.…

    Merit Pay Benefits

At the present time, merit pay continues to be relevant in America. With school district budgets decreasing across the nation, an excess of fiscal difficulties is undoubtedly negatively having a great impact on schools across the nation (Poston, 2011). For this reason, these negative impacts are causing school administrators to be less creative in its ability to attract and retain high-quality teachers. For example, the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) (n.d.) share that Russell Hobby, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), expressed that head teachers’ recruitment strategies across the country are becoming increasingly difficult to recruit teachers because teachers' salaries are rapidly becoming…

In 1855, the first National Education Association was established in the United States. In 1886, Massachusetts introduced Teacher Tenures. In 1909, New Jersey passed the first K-12 Tenure Law (Herbert 549). Has been developed throughout the history, teacher tenure has achieved innumerable beneficial and secured laws for teachers. Originated in ancient Greek, tenure is the protection and long-term employment for teachers from arbitrary dismissal, and it also allows teacher to focus on teaching without worrying of being fired (Herbert 549). However, in the recent dates, tenure’s value has been questioned due to many reasons. People who are against the system argue that tenure declines the teachers’ educational performances, and it is almost impossible to remove any poor performing teachers. Should teacher tenure be abolished? Although teacher tenure has been historically controversial, it should not be changed because it offers crucial, necessary protection from unreasonable dismissal and encourages instructors keeping the motivation in teaching.…

    Teacher Tenure Debate

    • 1398 Words
    • 6 Pages

Educators have enjoyed the benefits of tenure, which are extra protections after teaching for a small number of years, but the downside to it is that it protects the inadequate teachers from being fired. In the past, teachers were fired due to political, race, and sex discrimination before tenure. Although, since it is now difficult to remove the problem teachers who affect the futures of numerous children, there have been calls for reform to tenure. Laws for tenure are being debated in the media and in court cases. Possible solutions include lengthening the time it takes to receive tenure and creating a panel of peer advisors to determine if a teacher will be granted tenure. All of this arguing about education and tenure serves to bring these dire issues back into the limelight. Nothing is more important than giving the children of America the quality education that they need and deserve, and this starts with fixing the dilemma of teacher…

Elementary students had begun taking standardized tests, the tests ranked teachers in grades 3-5 accordingly. Any person is able to see the “value-added performance” (Kuehn, Larry). Anxiety led to devastating occurrences; “One teacher, distressed by being singled out, committed suicide days after the individual teacher results were released” (Kuehn, Larry). The government did not take this incident seriously, even though they attempted to think about the issues, the final answer was “test better” (Kuehn, Larry). The tests are not accurate, voluminous students do not take the test completely and honestly; those students tend to lower the teacher’s ranking. A teacher can never actually make students try their hardest on the standardized tests; the students must put forth the effort in order for all scores and teacher’s rankings to be a reflection of their…

Every weekday, he goes directly from Trinity Springs Middle School to drive a forklift at Floor and Décor. He works until 11 every night, then gets up and starts all over again.”(N.PAG.). For many people cannot imagine a workday such as that. On that note, how is Erik supposed to be able to grade his papers, and plan his next days material when he has to work everyday off of at best 7 hours of sleep. It is VERY ironic that the state government, the one that claims to support the ideals of living the American dream would cause such a situation as Erik’s. News and Observer writer Terry Grier reports “Many North Carolina teachers start out making just $31,000 a year. It takes five years before new teachers can earn a raise, and it can take as long as 15 years just to make it to $40,000. It takes 35 years to reach the top of the pay scale, which is just $53,000 if you don’t have an advanced degree.” (N.PAG.). There aren't many other places in a community where a person that requires the training that a teacher receives is paid such a measly salary. Let the Educators of our future leaders receive a greater annual income, because it is the only way…
