\ North Carolina has some the lowest state employee salaries in the United States, but the one that stands out from all the rest is the annual salary peid to the states teachers in the educational system. Education for the nations youth is one of the first priorities of the state as well as the nation a, in order to help students in the present as well as the future prosper the state should allow room in its budget to raise all teachers salaries. Its a pretty simple concept that when teachers are paid more, the results of grades are exponentially higher. Ann Flanagan as well as David W. Grissmer are expressing their opinions of this in their Book Effect of Teacher Pay on Student Performance when they say, “This …show more content…
effort is being hailed as a landmark in the movement to make schools and teachers more accountable for results and the first time that a state has so closely linked the wages of individual school personnel to their students exam results” (2).
The fact that such a theory can exist, that is backed by scientific data is outrageous. It shows that the state is more interested in saving money, then not only caring for its teachers but allowing the students be more successful. To allow teachers to do their job correctly the state should also raise the annual salary of teachers, such that they are not required to hold down multiple jobs and allow them more time to plan their main workday. If they don't have another job on the side then one can be sure that they have financial problems that they must worry about, instead of how their next work day may go. Jim Horn in his article 62 percent of teachers work two jobs states, “Sixty-two percent work outside the classroom to make ends meet. For Erik Benner, an award-winning history teacher in Keller, Tex., money has been a constant struggle. He has two children, and for 15 years has been unable …show more content…
to support them on his salary.
Every weekday, he goes directly from Trinity Springs Middle School to drive a forklift at Floor and Décor. He works until 11 every night, then gets up and starts all over again.”(N.PAG.). For many people cannot imagine a workday such as that. On that note, how is Erik supposed to be able to grade his papers, and plan his next days material when he has to work everyday off of at best 7 hours of sleep. It is VERY ironic that the state government, the one that claims to support the ideals of living the American dream would cause such a situation as Erik’s. News and Observer writer Terry Grier reports “Many North Carolina teachers start out making just $31,000 a year. It takes five years before new teachers can earn a raise, and it can take as long as 15 years just to make it to $40,000. It takes 35 years to reach the top of the pay scale, which is just $53,000 if you don’t have an advanced degree.” (N.PAG.). There aren't many other places in a community where a person that requires the training that a teacher receives is paid such a measly salary. Let the Educators of our future leaders receive a greater annual income, because it is the only way
for us to prosper in the future.
