The Hobbit Theme Essay
The Hobbit is that marvelous story that all fantasy books try to live up to. It’s that one book, that if your friends have no knowledge whatsoever of, you have a hard time believing them. And there is a reason why. J.R.R. Tolkien’s storytelling ability is astounding. The book begins in a “Hobbit’s” home. What is a Hobbit? Hobbits are small people, even smaller than Dwarfs. In their homeland, the Shire, they live fairly normal lives. But very rarely, one will go on an adventure. A great wizard, Gandalf, has chosen poor little Bilbo Baggins, to help on an adventure with thirteen Dwarfs. What do they aspire to do? They will attempt to travel through Middle Earth, and reclaim the riches stolen by a dragon named Smaug. Why is The Hobbit a fantasy book? First of all, we need to clarify what a fantasy really is. A fantasy, in its deepest form, is a story, which involves supernatural elements, in a fictional setting. What are examples of supernatural elements in the book? A major one, is magic. “He wanted it because it was a ring of power, and if you slipped that ring on your finger, you were invisible;” If we analyze this quote, we see that there is a magical ring, that when worn, makes you invisible. This is magic. The ring isn’t the only magic in the book. Beorn is a great example. Using magic, he can …show more content…
Why is that? It is the perfect example of a classic fantasy. It has a plot, that is an archetype in many books today, the unlikely hero. Bilbo Baggins was never thought to be an adventurer. In the end, he was thought to be the greatest of them all. From this point on, many stories have this plot. “The dwarves looked with quite a new respect, when he talked about dodging guards, jumping over Gollum, and squeezing through, as if it was not very difficult or very alarming.” As you can see, Bilbo had changed since he left the Shire, and had impressed the

The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkien is a fantasy book set in the medieval ages. Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, embarks on an epic journey with Gandalf and his “party” to recover lost treasure in the lonely mountain guarded by a dragon named Smaug. After making their way past trolls, spiders and Gollum, they finally get to Smaug, then manage to steal the treasure (with they divide up). The two main ideas I found in this book were Bilbo’s heroism and the storyteller (narrator).I think that this book explores and shows the theme good vs evil.…

“Soon the goblins had a ring of smoke and flame all round the dwarves, a ring which they kept from spreading outwards; but it closed slowly until the running fire was licking the fuel piled under the trees. Smoke was in Bilbo’s eyes, he could feel the heat of the flames( even though he was so high up in the trees); and through the reek he could see the goblins dancing round and round in a circle like people round a midsummer bonfire. Outside the ring of dancing warriors stood the wolves at a respectful distance watching and waiting to devour the first person that dropped dead out of the treetops. Bilbo could hear the goblins beginning a horrible song, and with that the flames were under Gandalf the wizards tree. In a moment it caught the others and went up like a rocket, when it was just beneath Bilbo’s, he closed his eyes, ready to die when...” As it can be seen Biblo and company were in many tight spots throughout this adventure, and he could not have done it all on his own. That is where Bilbo had to use the three themes of luck, courage and good sense to overcome evil and stay alive.…

The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien is said to be one of the greatest children's novels of all time. The novel, due to its use of such characters as goblins, elves, trolls, giants, and others is in tradition, a fairy tale. The tale centers on a small hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins. It follows the journey of a band of dwarves, a wizard named Gandalf, and their robber, Bilbo on their way to retrieving treasure that had long been taken away from them. The hobbit traveled all over Middle-Earth, beginning with Bilbo's tiny hobbit-hole in the ground, to Mirkwood forest, to finally reaching the Mountain in which the dragon Smaug lives. Tolkien uses a large amount of imagery in his writing which can been seen through settings in The Hobbit. The imagery is usually either dark or light, depending on Bilbo's mood and contrast of his surroundings. J.R.R Tolkien uses dark and light imagery in The Hobbit to effectively set an eerie and mysterious mood and to foreshadow events such as Bilbo's journey in Mirkwood and his adventure in the Mountain.…

The instance with the trolls may have frightened Bilbo, but when faced with Gollum, he used previous experience to be brave and think his way out of a dangerous situation. People today are no different than Bilbo in their behavior. Since many people are not comfortable facing new adventures and potential risks, they are shy away from the challenges that come along with it. Most people would rather back out of a risk they begin to take if they are initially afraid because they aren’t familiar with the new lifestyle they encounter. This directly relates to the first point because the fear of risks and challenges influence one’s comfort zone. Bilbo however, continues on, determined in his journey and learns bravery and confidence through it. Bilbo refused to back out right away like some would in this day in age. People today must keep pushing forward with the choices they make and risks taken, because without them, nothing is…

The Hobbit shares many of it's themes and several of its key qualities in characters with those established in previous stories or myths, starting with Bilbo Baggins. The aristocratic line present in the halfling’s family tree earns him the comfort and joy of the largest home with the most luxury in Bag End. Bilbo happens to be a Hobbit, which could be compared that of the most common physical description of Brownies with their small stature, brown curly hair, and docile nature. The childlike build of Hobbits gives an air of youth despite that the person may be middle aged, they are also a sheltered group that remains in their home’s reach and care not of adventures as noted by Bilbo;”I should think so- in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late to dinner, I can’t see what anybody sees in them.” (Tolkien, page 6) However, later in the text Bilbo contradicts this statement and joins the party…

“Bilbo’s understated charisma is a quality common to many protagonists in children’s literature. Another quality he shares with many heroes of children’s literature is his small size: as a hobbit, Bilbo is only half the size of a man. At the beginning of the novel, Bilbo is, like most hobbits, comfortable and complacent. He loves food, drink, and security, and he relishes his snug little hole at Bag End, Underhill. But as Gandalf says, there is more to Bilbo than meets the eye. Bilbo is a Baggins, the heir of a thoroughly respectable and conventional family, but his mother was a Took, an eccentric clan of hobbits noted for their love of excitement and adventure.” (SparkNotes, Analysis of Major Characters)…
