At first, Bilbo didn’t want to go on the adventure. He actually declined going. But, Gandalf and the dwarves still showed up, and Bilbo ended up going. The dwarves just showed, and assumed Bilbo was going.
If you really think about it, Gandalf kinda set Bilbo up.
Another example, when Bilbo had to go up ahead and make sure everything was safe. But, Bilbo ran into some trolls. At first, Bilbo tried to steal from them. But that didn't work out too well. Bilbo got caught. He ended up getting everyone else caught too. But, he got everyone out of trouble as well.
My final example, is when Bilbo met Gollum. At first Bilbo woke up alone, and went through a tunnel. He found a ring, and Gollum wasn't very happy about that. That was Gollum’s special ring. So when Gollum found out that Bilbo had the ring, he flipped out. Gollum tried to attack Bilbo. But the ring turned Bilbo invisible. Very unpredictable for a hobbit right?
In each example, Bilbo was in some way unpredictable. When Bilbo decided to go on the adventure, when he dealt with the trolls, and when he dealt with Gollum. So, you can kinda tell where the Took side stands out in more places than others.
